I've seen a boatload of people jumping on the home made face mask bandwagon. One of the mottos in any crisis is to give prople something to do for multiple reasons. It makes them feel like they are contributing reinforcing their self worth. It gives them a sense of control. It keeps them out of your hair. It actually may be of some benefit. Here is what the cdc says about the masks. I hope we don't get to that point. Sounds like NYC may be. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.htmlHCP use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

The local hospital made a bunch of kits with instructions and the materials for people to make a total of 11k disposable face masks. They would let folks pick up two kits per person abs each kit had enough material to make 40-50 masks. Supposedly you could pick the kits up between 1 and 3 today and between 9 and 11 tomorrow morning at two hospital lots. My wife stopped by at 1:30 and the kits were ALL gone! I can hear the scissors and seeing machines running clear out here! There really is a lot of good in many folks during a time such as this.

What's frightening is that a lot of HMOs and hospitals are telling their staffs to NOT wear masks when they're treating people that have not been tested positive. My youngest son and his wife are both doctors, and they are pretty much saying 'Yeah, right. How about YOU treat patients without a mask!' Hospitals everywhere are critically short of surgical masks, and many are not allowing homemade masks. The emergency stockpile was allowed to run down during the H1N1 flu crisis in 2009, and not replenished due to the cost and lack of a perceived need at the time.

Healthcare workers should not need for anything foe their own safety at work.

Local hospital here put the kits together and asked for volunteers to sew them. My wife put a kit together last night and we'll be dropping them off today. My understanding is that these will be used for secondary personnel to preserve the N95's for frontline staff. Wife and Daughter are both nurses and son is a Paramedic, they go through some masks for sure.
