Rickies... today I took a tight fitting bore brush, and a free spinning cleaning rod with a fine tipped marker line down it and measured from the muzzle, one half rotation of the rod at 5.5 inches, which should translate to a 1 in 11” twist rate on the 6 X 223 SSK barrel

Ok, that's slower than I'd want. Good luck with your sale.

I checked the notebook for my factory TC 14" 7-30 barrel. I was getting 2350 with the 150gr Nosler LR Accubond over a heavy charge of Alliant 2000-MR powder. These are loaded long. From my notes there's room for more performance, and room for more powder. I wouldn't say that you'd get the same results, but it's worth a look at that powder and that bullet. I'd found amazing results with the 2000-MR in the 308 using heavy bullets. Excellent velocity, excellent accuracy, without sketchy pressure damage to the brass. That bullet has excellent BC and it's constructed to work on game down to 1300fps impact velocity. Here in Northern Nevada with the 2350fps launch velocity it's still going over 2100 at 200 yards, over 2000 at 300. I haven't killed deer with that load, but I have heard from folks who have had success with low speed impacts with this bullet. I might have the chance to find out for myself later this year. Also, note that Nosler makes 30-30 brass. I've found that the Nosler brass tends to be tougher than Federal or Winchester brass. I have yet to try it with the 7-30, but my guess is that it might be useful for the higher-zoot handloads. I intend to get some at some time to try.

On the 7-30 Waters note. I’ve got a box of his hand loads that he signed the box for me while my brother and I were visiting with him about 15yrs ago. What a nice man.

BTW... if you are curious on the custom barrels, most were made for me by my retired tool & die buddy, & the base is machined, & the barrels are threaded into them... stronger than welding the base to the barrel, & easier to set the head space for the action... bluing, or duracoat or similar, & you'll have a barrel often times better than the factory produced

On that 7x30 Waters. I own 2 Contender barrels in that caliber. One is a Super 14" & the other one is the 12" with the muzzle brake. Both are very, very accurate. I use the 150 grn Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets,, and a moderate load. I have taken well over 100 whitetails, an elk, and many other smaller critters with it. Almost all on my whitetails were taken with neck shots. It's THAT accurate.

Thanks anyway. Heavy into Contenders myself, only have the one Encore and would like to find a 15 inch Swede barrel for it one day.
