Good day to all. I have been a long time watcher but this is my first post.. what would y’all say would be better to buy a ruger redhawk 45acp/45colt with 4.2 barrel or a ruger Blackhawk 44 mag with 5.5 barrel and biesly grip. It would be a packing gun for mountain hiking, fishing. Mostly 4 legged critters. I have small hands and am only 5’6 so I want a good packer I can handle. Thanks

Welcome you cajun coonass! I own guns like you mentioned. The 45 Colt is a bit more versatile in my opinion where ammo is concerned if you reload. But the gun you mention is a bigger framed design,, so how you pack it needs to be considered. if it was my choice to make,, I'd be right at home with a Single-Action in my hands. But it's YOUR hands that need to feel comfortable! You have chosen 2 different designs,, and different calibers,, so the opinions will be all over the place. Why not combine the two? A Bisley 45 Convertible Ruger single action?

My opinion, which doesn't mean squat.... You possibly have medium hands so the standard XR3-Red frame would do nicely. I own a 45 Redhawk with factory rubber grips. Havent warmed up to the danged thing yet. Honestly, were my hands not the size to palm a watermelon, I would love the regular Blackhawk (if I could find one) in 44 mag. I think though you are speaking of the Super Blackhawk (blind intuition) which is a favorite of mine. Again, large grabbers.

With the Redhawk, you could easily go from easy shooting 45acp to what is called RHO loads, Redhawk Only!!! Which would pretty much set you up for everything you might encounter. The factory Redhawk grip with wood is sufficient in size for medium to small hands, and with an aftermarket set of grips could be made to fit like a glove.. The 45Colt in the Redhawk is head and shoulders over the 44mag, I was looking at getting a Bisley Hunter in 45Colt to hunt with when I realized the same type gun in a Redhawk would be capable of handling much wider range of power, so now I’m looking for a Redhawk.
and welcome to the site!!!

Not single action or Ruger; but mountain hiking / fishing sounds like a sw 69 to me.

For a gun that I wanted to deploy quickly I would want a double action. As I am about your height I find a 4 inch barrel is about as long as I can pull well. My hands are right on the edge of medium and large according to glove size. And I find either of those 2 guns feel well in my hands. I prefer the .44 as I can load it for soft .44 specials to hot magnums.

Welcome to the forum! Remember that all revolvers are easy to carry and completely weightless when you're sitting in your recliner trying to decide on a revolver. I've hiked/packed/fished in the mountains of New Mexico and the reality is that carrying a revolver that you're extremely unlikely to need on a 4-legged critter in the lower 48 that will do good to go 250 lbs. doesn't call for a revolver that weighs nearly 3 lbs. unloaded. Clunky, heavy revolvers begin to weigh on the hip. If Ruger could just see fit to trim their revolvers down by machining off the sharp edges and doing away with the useless unfluted cylinders, they'd have a winner for packing. Even their little 3 3/4" New Vaquero's are too heavy for the package, IMHO, and the birdshead grips are very difficult for me to shoot accurately and tend to pound the palm more than traditional grips. I carry a 4 3/4" Uberti Frisco in 45 Colt which weighs 35 oz. and is the second most accurate revolver I own. But, since you're interested in Ruger's, I'd suggest a New Model Blackhawk Convertible. At 36 oz. they're about the lightest 45 Colt SA Ruger offers. Cholla

Thanks I will be hand loading. Just wish I could shoot the redhawk to see. I have a super red hawk in 44 mag with 7.5 barrel but it is my hunting gun with a scope and at my height I could plant corn behind me if I carried it on my hip! Think I’m going 45 just not sure of single or double. And yes the s&w 69 has been looked at as a choice.

Thanks I WOULD DEFINITELY GO FOR THE BISLEY .44 OR .45 OR AT LEAST A BETTER CHOICE FOR A .45 THAN THE REDHAWK .45/.45 ACP WHICH DOES NOT SHOOT THE .45 COLT AS WELL AS A SIXGUN DEDICATED TO .45 COLT ONLY. THE REGULAR STAINLESS 4" REDHAWK .45 COLT (OR .44 MAGNUM)WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR AN OUTDOOR PACKIN' PISTOL.

Groo here As you said "packing gun for mountain hiking, fishing", weight is just as important as size and kick. If you want a single action , a mid frame Ruger flat top Blackhawk convertable 45 colt/45acp . For a double action A S&W M325 Thunder ranch 45acp that can also shoot 45AR and 45 super [ so sayth S&W]. OR a Governor That shoots 45acp [moonclips] 45 colt [ not ruger loads] AND 410 shotgun [for snake"s] Neither are too heavy [ruger 36oz,,,S&W 325 30.5 oz or even a Governor at 29.6oz]

DA is a necessity for defensive work. I have the L Frame Smith and Wesson 44 Magnum in a 4" and it is a great carry gun. Weight and frame size make a difference. The 69 is controllable and very accurate and sturdy.
Handle a 69 before you make a final decision. Also they make it in a 2.75" 44 Mag also.
I'm 73 and stand 5'8" and a 170 lbs, nothing longer than a 4.2" barrel.

If those were the only choices you had ... either will do it. Pick your fave. If it was up to me, even as much as I like 45 Colt, I’d probably have to vote for a double action .44 Mag. You can get a light frame, or even L frame to lighten the load you carry and you can find suitable ammo almost everywhere.
