...of the best kind! I've long admired the gun in his avatar, so when I was offered a S&W .38 Single Action (2nd Model) at a good price I snapped it up and set to work. The gun was missing a screw and the seller didn't understand how it was supposed to work and thought it was broken. I bobbed the barrel at 1-5/8" to match my Safety Hammerless, crowned it, made and installed a new front sight and finally made a set of elk antler grips. Test firing the gun produced very good results at 7 yards, and it is a handy little device. The project wound up sidelined for some time, because I was determined not to strip the nickel with abrasives. Somehow I never got around to buying the chemicals, and since I have a lot of time on my hands I caved. It took a while, and of course sanded nickel looks the same as sanded steel, so I missed a few spots on the first pass. I finished sanded it to 280 grit, then rust blued it with mark lee's #1 Instant Rust Blue. I left the screws. pins etc. alone to provide some contrast. After the first pass I went back to the shop to get the nickel spots I had missed, then completed the refinishing. Of course when reassembling the gun, which requires holding a small panel in place against spring pressure, I lot my grip and it sprang apart again. This caused the lock spring to head for parts still unknown. This is a very small, very flat lollipop-shaped spring with a hole in the center for the screw that retains the plate I mentioned earlier. It's pretty simple, so I flattened some music wire to fabricated a new spring, and eventually got it to fit and function. Other than that it's a pretty simple and straightforward gun, so the rest of the assembly was easy. So, here's the finished gun: As you can see from the last photo this is not at all a large gun. I plan to use it as a back-up or for very discreet carry. Anyway, very happy that it is finally finished!

Nice work... it is amazing how small they are... the #1.5 in 32 S&W even smaller ( I’ve got one of those I want to blue as well, that also had the barrel chopped long ago, and renickled, as well as a thicker front sight added ) these look so much nicer in blue... the #2 in my avatar wears a set of original & perfect set of mop grips, with S&W brass medallions, that are worth as much as the gun, that came out of South America... my #1.5 has a set of 60’s Gil Scottie redwood grips that I added a set of nickel S&W medallions to, and look good in their own right
Do you remember the thread that I used the gun in my avatar to requalify for my ccw license the 2nd time... The instructor was impressed that I could outshoot a lot of the newbies with their compact 9’s

I should take a picture of the 38 & 32 next to my Snake Eyes NAA 22 LR, before I sell the "snake eyes" poker set & gun... they go on list 5 the NAA will be the last 22 I'm selling, that will leave me a stainless J Frame, a Stainless bull barrel Gov. Target model & my 10-22 set up for Appleseed... should be all the 22's a guy "needs" ... at least until the next one shows up that I just have to have... then 4 will be enough
