Just talked to my local gun dealer and ordered a S&W Model 69 in the 2.75" barrel.
I've been on a mission with .45 and .475 Blackhawks for a number of years, so somehow I totally missed the existence of the model 69 until recently when I read paul105's posts about his work with them. That was all the excuse I really needed.
The L frame 44 seems ideal to me. I never warmed up to the N frames, but always enjoyed my 686. So this .44 seems like a great idea for in the woods, riding atvs, hiking etc.
I've got some factory 240 jhp 44 mag and 200 gr lead 44 Special loads. BUT I intend to roll a few of my own with H110 and maybe some HS6 since I have both on hand now. I know all guns are unique in their tastes but, but any bullet suggestion or something y'all have seen working well?

So far, I've shot, in the way of break-in loads, 200 and 240gr JHP, on 11 and 10grs of CFE-P. Velos were all around 990-1005. This from the 2.75". A heavy bullet load using the Missouri 300gr Hammer got 2400 powder. Loaded on 14grs of 2400, either seated in cannelure in 44spec brass or over the shoulder in mag brass. It was my thought that the 44spec brass ejects, clears the cylinder more reliably . I did try some top end 44mag loads here meant for the SBH Hunter and a couple of Buffalo Bore 305gr LFN's just to see... Find your own limit, safely. Oh, the CA-44 speedloaders can work, they have enough wobble to the fit to work in the slightly larger cylinder.

I just happen to have some CFE Pistol on its way. That sounds like it would be a fun/useful loading.

It's the starting load. Nothing to sneeze at in any case.

Groo here The heavy / long bullets will need heaver loads to spin up ans stablize in the shorter barrels. I have a "shorty" too and would not go above 240/250 gr with the lighter loadings. If you load full up ,, OK. I think of mine as a 44 spec that can shoot Skeeter/keith loads for ever AND 44mag "just in case"

Have the 4.2" and it's a great revolver. Brian Pearce load of 8.5 grains of Power Pistol that is pleasingly accurate and 950fps, 17-18K on pressure. My 69 loves it.

May I please ask who makes that holster? I haven't been able to find a decent shuck for my 69.

It’s either a Milt Sparks or copy of a Milt Sparks.

I got a smith 69 4.25 about 3 weeks ago. It is Quickly becoming one of my favorite pistols. I have had good luck with HS-6 and 255 grain Keith bullets.

The holster pictured with my 69 is from our forum's hidestretcher Mike "Doc" Barranti. I have a CCR for a 3" 29 on order, hopefully being built by Mike at this time. So Mike if you read this it's the brown colored CCR lefthand for a Smith 29 3">
