Some may consider a Friday the 13th as unlucky,,, but today,, well,, a little luck & some modest skill made for a heck of a kill.
Locally, we do like to hunt crows,, as often as we can. And on my gun range,, they tend to be quite shy about hanging around. Still,, occasionally,, I've managed to get a few. Today,, I made a kill on a crow,, that was very lucky for me,, (well, maybe it was VERY unlucky from the crow's viewpoint.) I was working in my range house,, with my truck parked about 20-25 yds away,, on the pad. My guns were in the truck. I came out of the house,, heard a crow cawing in the tree right above my truck. I thought; "Quite brazen!" Then I realized my guns were in the truck. I figured, "What the heck,, let's see if I can get to one." So, I casually walked to my truck,, and opened the door, reaching for my Ruger MKII Competition Target as I listened to the crow. By "ignoring" it,, I hoped it'd hang around long enough for a shot. Well, I slipped my head & shoulders out of the cab,, using the edge of the roof as my brace,, and began to align my sights. As I did,, the crow decided it'd had enough & started to fly off. I quickly threw a shot,, as it began to fly,,,,,,,,,,,, and MISSED! Dang it,,, well, I then quickly followed up with a follow-up shot,, on the crow as it was flying,, and connected with a DRT,, fold up like a pocket knife aerial killing shot! My lucky friday the 13th kill!
I bet the crow would disagree with the day being lucky!

Thanks! I do a lot of shooting,, and having been a door gunner in the past,, along with shooting USPSA where we have moving targets occasionally, I've learned a LITTLE about shooting moving targets. But I still feel a lot of lucky "friday the 13th" had a hand in things!

Paco Kelly once wrote of a similar happening when he was head of the Virginia Drug Enforcement Dept. He was hunting with the Governor, when a crow started pestering them with his "caws". The Governor began to pester Paco to shoot the crow, but Paco declined several times. Finally, he whipped out his pistol and took aim at the crow in the tree. Just then, the Governor yelled, the crow began to take off, and Paco fired, killing the crow. Paco said the Gov. delighted in telling people "Paco shoots flying crows with his pistol!"

Ken,, you made me chuckle with that.
About 2 years ago,,, across the road from my range,, on property we used to own,, I was talking with the new owner. As we were talking,, a crow flew in & landed in a tree about 50 yds away. I politely asked him if I could shoot it. He said; "Sure." I reached in my truck, pulled out the same MKII, and nailed the crow,, while it sat on the tree at about 50-55 yds. He STILL tells this story all around town here. (Kinda like that Gov.) I WISH he could have seen the one I shot Friday. I can hear him now,,,,!

Tell everybody that the first shot was to scare him off and give him a "flying" chance. LOL.

I prefer the truth,, as it's more believable. Besides,, too many folks would not believe it anyway!
