They look nice, although I haven't handled one and can't for some time (they're kinda scarce in these parts!). They have a terrible reputation, from what I understand. Unless I'm mistaken, Remington has discontinued all their handguns, largely as a result of lackluster sales of the R1, and the other (handgun) turds they have peddled over the past few years. You can buy the R1 - or the major components of same - for stupid cheap. CDNN has been blowing out R1 parts for some time at practically giveaway prices.
Now I realize that in the real world, all of this probably means that there would be zero warranty support for an R1 if the need arises. I'm not sure exactly how much that prospect worries me. I have heard of a few instances of serious problems with recent manufacture 1911s - from Remington, Ruger, and a couple of others. Some of these problems resulted in the gun being either replaced by the manufacturer, or being bought back by the manufacturer. Everyone turns out a turd once in a while, I get that. Are the R1s a flawed execution of a century old design?

What's wrong with them? They're made by Remington! Really just a rebranded Para USA... which is also what's wrong with them. I have experiance with a sample size of 1 when it comes to Para's. Poor metallurgy? The 10mm I had went from a very tight well fit gun, to rattle trap in about 450 rounds. It was also the least accurate, non pocket pistol semi auto I've ever owned. (and most of the pocket pistols I've owned were more accurate than it)

I guess I missed out on the fact that they're rebadged Paras. That explains a good deal. I'll pass.

Don't know about the Para thing, never heard that, but I have had an R1 for some time and other than needing some break in time, and a home polishing of the feed ramp, its been a good realiable, and accurate pistol. Very smooth too. I have one of the more rare versions with an OD green frame and black slide. Have only seen one other like it. Good pistol. If a good deal is out there I don't think it would be stupid to snag one.

I have one of the plain jane R1s. As mentioned above it needed a little bit of work on the feed ramp but other than that it has been a great pistol. It's had about 8000 rounds through it, nearly all cast and many different designs. Mine will do 1-1/2" to 2" 5 round groups @25 yards with several different loads, not spectacular but good and not very picky. I really like the thing and wouldn't hesitate to grab it in a bad situation.

Remington (Freedom group) swallowed up Para USA and then suddenly started selling Remington 1911's.

Remington (Freedom group) swallowed up Para USA and then suddenly started selling Remington 1911's. And have now stopped selling all handguns, Modern Sporting Rifles, etc., and will concentrate on sales of their Fudd guns. DPMS, Bushmaster, and one or two other subsidiary companies have been put to bed. I would expect that repair parts and warranty of said items is also nonexistent now.

Remington was selling 1911s several years before they bought PARA-USA and moved the production to their 1911 plant.
From what I see on their website they are still selling 1911s...
Several friends have them and they are a good gun for the money...
I remember when I heard an interview with the CEO of Freedom Group...my first thought was "this is not going to end well"....and so far I have been right. They bought up several successful long term gun companies and put them out of business.

I looked at Remington's website, and there is nothing to indicate that they have stopped handgun production, or indeed production of their Modern Sporting Rifles. Guess time will tell.

Remington made guns in Ilion for a few years (though there's debate on how much of it was made there.) They moved it all to Huntsville (and bought and killed Para (though no real loss) and like everything else Freedom/current Remington touched, went in the toidy.
