Some of you may remember the 64-5 that I converted into a 65 this time last year.

Well since that project was done I've been thinking about doing a model 10. I could never seem to find the right gun or the parts to get started. That all changed recently when I found a three inch model 13 parts kit on everygunpart.com. Coupled with a nice presidents day sale and free shipping I pulled the trigger. Now looking at the parts in the picture I could tell the kit I bought was from a 13-3. It didn't have a pinned barrel or recessed cylinder and it did have the old style yoke screw. To make the best attempt at matching up the bluing I would have to find a 10-8 which would be from the same time period.
Now I really wanted to do a 10-10 but I could not seem to find one suitable for this project, ideally I needed a four inch round butt gun but it seemed there weren't really any out there. What I did find was my pick of three different 10-8 round butt guns on Gunbroker. This one was the only no reserve auction and it generated quite a bit of interest. The dang thing sold for about $50 higher than I was hoping but like all auctions I had invested a bunch of time into watching it. The pictures were bad but from what I could tell most of the bluing loss was on the barrel and cylinder.
It was in a little worse shape than I had hoped but I decided to go forth with the swap. The chances of me finding another round butt gun that cheap with less wear are nearly none.
All stripped down with all the extra parts
For this project I decided to get some power custom K frame delrin inserts. Rather than buy the frame wrench I figured I could do one better and make one. This is just some 3/8" bar cut 4.5 inches long with two half inch holes drilled 3 inches apart. I welded a 15 inch handle to one side. The barrel blocks are the same oak ones I made for the 64.
The barrel unthreaded almost effortlessly.
With the hard part over and the frame surviving it was time to test fit the new barrel.
The new barrel hand tightened just a little short of where I wanted so I had to trim a few thousands off with my brownell's barrel setback tool. Once it clocked where I wanted it I stuck the whole thing back into the vice and cranked it down.
The end result is the barrel, cylinder, ejector rod, hammer, trigger and hand all dropped into the gun with no adjustments. I even stuck on the 13 sideplate with no fitting. The original cylinder stop was used and with the 13 cylinder is much tighter. I didn't measure the barrel to cylinder gap but my eyeball says it's perfect. Match range rod passes all chambers.
And here it is with a nice set of round butt magnas
I still want to check a few things out and do some tinkering. The 13 yoke would not fit I believe it's too long. I may try to fit it since the original 10 yoke has some bluing loss.
