Quite some time ago I found a decent deal of a Clements .45 Vaquero on Gunbroker. The only work the seller had done on the revolver was adding David's fine pre-war S&W style rear sight. The real selling point for me was the serial number placement was good for a 5 shot conversion so it came to NM. Now, why anyone wouldn't at least have an action job done on it while the gun was away is beyond me but the trigger was awful and the billboard was still on the barrel. I contacted several of the smiths I like and asked about a 5 shot conversion. All said no go as the tops trap work for fitting the sight might compromise the frame strength if they opened up the cylinder window for an oversized cylinder. While I was figuring out what to do with this gun I had my spot come up with Zane at Lone Star Grips and he crafted some super nice bighorn sheep shoes for it. You've seen those before. When the grip frame returned it was time for plan 2 and it turned out beautifully. I sent the gun back to David and he fitted a .357 Max cylinder linebored for .45 Colt using his 6 shot accurized conversion, a deluxe action tune, house made crescent ejector rod, Belt Mountain base pin and case coloring for the frame and hammer by Turnbull. It's always something....I forgot to have the trigger colored. Some day I'll get it right.... I just can't say enough good about David and his work! He's slowing down some and not currently taking orders so I'm grateful he was willing to do this build. Needless to say the trigger is fixed. Here's a before pic: Here it is now...

That turned out nice! I'm not normally a fan of soldered on one piece front sights, but the contours of that one look great. I think I know exactly how that gun feels when you work the action. Not light, but right and tight.
That gun needs some black leather or maybe a very dark Burgundy (or if you're familiar with Lucchese's black cherry??).
Was the rear sight worth the price of admission?

Extremely nice gun. Had a long conversation with Dave this morning about some of my ongoing projects.
Congratulations on a great one...

I always say I think my favorite top strap is the vaquero with Smith sight. I did not realize that you could not do a 5 shot conversion on one though. That's a bummer. Great looking gun.

That is very tastefully done. That sight is very Old School. The rest of it ain't too bad either.......

I have had a couple of Vaqueros with Davids rear sight and he does an amazing job of blending and fitting on those. That turned out great Greg. Is the supply of Max cylinders about dried up in the parts box?

Man oh man is that a looker!
If Ruger ever offers the Vaquero with a good, adjustable rear sight my wallet is going to be in a world of pain...
