As has been said, unique and trail boss, pretty much covers all my 45 colt loads, unique in my bisley blackhawk, and trail boss in my new vaquero

Good question, gsp7. And interesting to see what others recommend. Eventually, I'd like to limit my powder universe, like wheelguns and Dick. For now, loading 45 Colt (and other calibers) I like Unique more and more. As long as there are published loads, I'm a sucker for powder recommendations. Loaded some 38 special the other day with Clays. Frustrating session. Very difficult through my Uniflow powder measure. Throws inconsistent. So I cleaned the measure and tried running another hopper through. Same issue...crunch, crunch, crunch. Thought, "There must be something wrong here." Then tried Unique. Easy, satisfying, fun. Apartment neighbors might have thought they heard a metronome going. How easily and accurately a powder measures with your particular set-up might be one consideration. My Uniflow likes Unique. ***** Compatibility of powder with powder measure is important. I’ve not experienced your “crunch crunch crunch” in cycling Hodgdon Clays through a couple of RCBS Uniflow measures made decades apart. If you’re “a sucker for powder recommendations”.... .45 Colt * Fast----Win 231/HP-38 (both are 231). * Medium----Hodgdon HS-6. * Slow----Win 296/H110 (both are 296). Reduce selection to two powders for Ruger and Freedom Arms M-83* Medium----HS-6. * Slow----296/H110. Light loads in the Peacemaker frame* Fast----Win 231/HP-38 David Bradshaw Thanks, David. I appreciate your, and all the recommendations here. Interesting to see the repeats. HS6 has been on my radar for awhile.

Old skool (Unique, 2400 and H110). Just started with HS6 3 years ago for the 475 and 454 midrange loads and will be trying some soon in 45 Colt.

Although 2400 has been my goto for 45 Colt;
Kinda fallin in love with Vihtavouri. The N340 really hits a sweet spot (medium to barely hot) for me in lots of calibers: .32, 38spl, 357mag, 357Max, 10mm, 44mag, and the 45 Colt. It also downloads beautifully without spikes or peaks; as opposed to H110/296. It has great accuracy in everything and it burns really clean.
I've also used their N110 for hot loads with good success. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Old school works for me too gregs. Unique, 2400, HS-6, H-110 cover all my needs.

Prescut, Hope you pass by this thread again. When you say N340, "...downloads beautifully without spikes or peaks..." do you mean consistent chronograph readings or ?? Thanks!

I use VV N-340 in my Uberti 1873, but at those pressures it burns dirty and smokes a bunch. I can find no Ruger/FA loads for 340 to try at more vigorous recipes. Any suggestions?

Hi... Everything I need my .45Colts has and can be done with Unique and 2400. Works well in my Model 25, standard BlackHawk, full size Vaqueros, Ubertis and my Cimarron 1873 lever action rifle.
I occasionally test some other powders but always go back to Unique and 2400.
I have been reloading .45Colt for over 30 years, so I still am pretty much a novice.

Hey Ramar, Some powders have a straight-line linear pressure increase or decrease, as you increase/decrease powder weights. A spike is when a small amount of weight change can create sudden spike in pressure; if you were graphing your velocity, you would not see a straight line, but a spike one one spot. Certainly one way of seeing it is with the chrono (pressure changes by watching velocity). You can see the pressure increasing "steadily" and then suddenly show a bigger increase; in some load data tables where pressure is shown. Lots of folks on here know a lot more on the topic than me. Maybe they will be along. One of the reasons I like N340 is that it burns consistent and clean at low weights and high weights. I can extrapolate what my velocity should be at any weight when I know the velocity difference at 2 weights. I love H110 but I don't download it; I stay closer to max and it does great. Prescut

What is your current recipe for that uberti? are you talking 45 Colt? I'm on the road, but I recall my very best groups (.25" with T/C and scope) at 25 yards being with the N340, I have columns in my data capture sheet for clean/dirty and I don't think I marked anything down on dirty. I'll check and get back to you. Prescut

Prescut, my apologies; the "dirty & smokey" remarks should have been in reference to Accurate #5, not N-340. I only used the VihtaVuori load charts for the 340 loads, and have only tried 11 grains under a 200gr cast bullet. They list 9.2-9.8 for 250 grain, and I'm pretty sure that is for SAA guns.
I'd like to try 340 in some more robust recipes for my Bisley, as I have used more VV powder than all others combined in the last 30 years, but that has been in PPC and varmint cases. VV has been at the top in all the loads I have used it in over that span.
