Elk might be your largest intended target. In elk country, what might target you, or your downed elk ? A thought.

I had the privilege of shooting a Redhawk that was converted to .454 (by Huntington), utilizing the .44 Mag cylinder it left the factory with (made from 416 and not the superior 17-4PH stainless steel that Huntington uses on his ss guns) that had been subjected to literally thousands of full-tilt .454 Casull loads over more than three decades. No problems whatsoever. Same diameter and same bolt hole circle. Jack also hardens the cylinders to H900 heat treat level (42 - 44 Rockwell C). You would have to be grossly negligent to hurt one of these guns and I doubt it would be possible using magnum-type powders. Keep in mind that Ross Seyfried ran 60,000 PSI plus loads through his six-shot oversized Seville with nary a hiccup (same bolt hole circle). As an aside, he never had any extraction issues and assumed the loads were of a lower pressure than he suspected. That was until he had them pressure tested and was aghast. No light loads for Ross!

This is EXACTLY why I'm currently having a 38-40 WCF built in a SRH. I'm figuring will be extremely strong gun for hunting or experimenting with loads.

One thing I just ran into was a build using a Vaquero with a Clements S&W rear sight was that none of the smiths I frequently like to use would put a 5 shot cylinder in it. I chose to use a .357 max cylinder re-bored to .45 instead.
I was told even opening up the cylinder window a little with the top strap mod for the sight could cause a problem.
This is a little out of the ordinary in regard to the OP's question but I was surprised (and a little disappointed) when I learned this as the serial number was good for the 5 shot conversion which isn't easy to find.

Mid-frame or full size?

Mid-frame or full size? This was a full size gun. I don't think being a mid size frame would have made any difference.
