I'd sure like to see a picture of the ratchet... this was the subject of long conversations between my retired buddy & myself I sure thought that 5 cartridges would fit but the rims seemed to get in the way of the ratchet when we laid things out during those talks

In the article he's using a full size gun so they should fit same as 500 linebaugh.

My best grade guns in .50 Special are nicer.
Why would you do the base pin latch on a big bore gun?
I wouldn't have fire blued the base pin either....

JMO And yes your 50sp are nicer but then they are as nice as any gun Bowen has ever built. Well personal taste I guess. Personally I like the .50sp but the build would cost the same as a full 500 Linebaugh. I’d build the 500L and shoot it at the 50sp happily for years to come. Then the horsepower is available should one decide they might need it and because if you ever wanted to sell it the 500L would be a lot easier sale if think. But what do I know? YMMV

I will probably never in my life be able to commission a custom from the likes of Bowen, but I like the base pin latch as one of the classiest touches to add to a custom even if it isn't necessary. I think the .50 Special is a very interesting cartridge and I think a gun like the one in the article with about another inch or so of barrel and a barrel band would look a lot like one I would love to own.

Having had the pleasure of owning a beautiful 50sp from Bowen/Fishpaw I’ll tell you horsepower was never a factor. It was a pleasant gun to shoot giant .510 bullets out of and it was extremely accurate. I had the 475L if I wanted to start bending wrist.
It’s tough to lump it in with other big bores when thinking about custom options because it was a different animal altogether.

This is a conversion & cartridge that interests me greatly, does anyone do a .510 rebore...Or would starting out with blank be necessary?

You used to be able get a .50 rebore, but as far as I know those days are done. Here's one of the last .500 rebores out of delta gun shop. Rebored redhawk barrel on a Super Redhawk. Robbs right though, for a single action no need to go to a rebore.

I was just thinking about a S&W barrel rebore, I have a few put back for such a project. I'll probably just keep a eye out for a Single Action 50 Special already completed on the use market for the time being.

Bowen will still whittle out a S&W style barrel in 500 Linebaugh for about $500 over the cost of a Nimrod style barrel. You would probably be in for more than that with a buying a S&W barrel, reboring, and fitting.
