A couple added their names to the list of persons asking my advice on a sub-compact 9mm Luger. Not a .380; nor the .38 Special I’ve put in many hands. This cartridge: 9 Mike Mike, no other, and no revolver. Strictly self defense. What works. The super-reliable SIG P239 is too expensive and Glock 26 possibly so, and both are too big. Must be DELAYED BLOWBACK, since the 9mm is too hot for straight blowback (nasty recoil). Pistols by Ruger and S&W have come into play. Anything of questionable reliability need not apply. I have serious respect for the Russian Makarov and its cartridge is way ahead of the .380, but it is too big. Will pass on information, don’t want to give a bum steer. David Bradshaw

Got a Sig 365 with safety for Miss Dawn. She loves it and bought me one for my birthday!!! Very small, reliable as gravity, comes with night sights and a decent trigger.

I'll offer up the Kel Tec PF9 for consideration.
I have 3 of their guns, a P-32, P-11, and PF-9, and all have been quite reliable. A small sample to be sure but, that's all I got.
All have, so far, digested both HP and round-nose rounds without complaint. I have not shot any of them a great deal, only a couple of boxes when new to feel them out and then a couple of magazines occasionally to reassure myself they will go BANG if called upon.
Due to their light weight, they carry well but are (for me) rather difficult to shoot well and not very pleasant, …not good plinkers.
My personal preference is the P-11 but they seem to be out of production and used ones pretty scarce.
Kel Tec does not seem to get much respect among shooters. Wondering why. I'd be interested to hear others experience with them.

The S&W Shield pistols are accurate and reliable. I have two ,son has one and I know half a dozen more people that have them. All are reliable and accurate.

Kahr Cm9. I carry one daily. It has the shorter grip...Cw 9 has a longer grip. Trigger pull is like a slick double action revolver. I carried a Taurus PT111 for a couple of years. No problems, palm size groups at 25 yards...yes, yards. I liked it. Liked the safety. I let it go when I started carrying a CZ Compact...too much difference between the triggers and I wasn't about to give up the CZ. The Taurus gets a lot of hate...generally from people who haven't owned one.

Sig P365. I was honestly shocked the first time I fired one, it was leagues above the competition at the time. It's so good, Glock launched an entire new line of guns trying to compete!
Please Do Not buy a Ruger LC9. Small Guns SUCK. and the trigger on the LC9 is particularly bad. Really zero effort put in by Ruger to make an acceptable trigger. I've seen so many new shooters try to use it and it just demands so much more effort from the user.
If you have a really loose definition of "sub-compact", check out the Sig p320 as well.
OH!
If hand strength is an issue, look at the S&W EZ 9mm. I have the 380 version and I really like it! But, I have no experience with the 9.
Elsewise, get the p365.

A friend of mine has a SCCY 9mm. It shoots well and I would have one if I needed a gun for the tackle box.

Kahr CM9 or PM9... I have the PM9 and is my "in between" gun for when the Commander is too large and the Kahr P380 is too small... I did my LEOSA qualification with it and shot the same scores as the G19, a 100% and a -1 at ranges from 3-25 yards... The CMs are on sale right now...they can be found in the $250 area. bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/kahr-arms-cm9-deal-250.267796/#post-4780790Much prefer the light DA over a striker fired "SafeAction" as I don't have to use a holster or snapover trigger guard and worry about having an unintentional discharge... I know it’s long since this topic was brought up Jan 2020 but I know a lot of people look back to these or get off their usual topic of interest and surf them from time-to-time. That said, I wanted to add to the comments regarding Ruger’s LC9 family. I agree that the original LC9 trigger wasn’t much to brag about. It is very similar to a DA revolver’s trigger, it is just easier to conceal. HOWEVER, the LC9-PRO, LC9-S, and EC9-S are a whole new deal when it comes to their triggers. I had an opportunity to shoot the Glock 43 at a Range demo and was impressed with it’s accuracy, ONLY. I made a point to seek out a Ruger LC9-S the very next day and was so impressed with the way it felt in the hand, it’s natural pointability (I’m a SA & 1911 fan), and the trigger action, that I bought it. I’ve bought three more since then for some of my daughters. Initially their price point was lower than the Glock 43 and other pistols of similar size. Current times have all the prices “jacked up” but the EC9-S can still be found for under $400. It’s not a hi-capacity like the Sig P365 or the Springfield Hellcat. In its’ basic load out it’s 7+1. It has higher capacity mags available. If that’s not a deal breaker for you, don’t overlook them. My only criticisms are the cost of Ruger magazines which are, IMHO, too D*** expensive (they always have been compared to others in their market) and no light rail. I can go either way on the value of light rail, they are handy on home defense pistols, but I’d at least appreciate a choice.

Ditto on the Sig 365.
Surprisingly easy to handle & connect with, in that size category.
Haven't been able to try out the SA Hellcat yet.

I'm late to this conversation. Missed it the first time.
I concur with pbj2643,, in looking at the Ruger line. Since money is an issue,, they sell for less than the Sig's,, and are quite reliable. Both the LC or EC line.

What are you guys shooting in your P365's? I loved mine with standard pressure ammo, but my usual carry is Federal 124 gr. HST +P and that ammo was NOT ok in the P365 I had (and sold). Flattened primers and it felt like I was shooting 9mm Major ammo in IPSC.
Still carrying the G43, which handles the +P recoil better than the P365 (and the G26, IMO), and is accurate and 100% reliable so far.
I carry in my right front pocket with the DeSantis Superfly, without the removable outer flap.
