6 or 7 years ago, I bought a shooter grade Smith 58 in 41 magnum from Cabelas just outside of Houston, Tx.
No original grips, no box or paperwork, turn ring on the cylinder and a couple very tiny rust spots on the frame and barrel. Most of the rust came off with an overnight soaking of 50/50 ATF and diesel fuel and the barrel cleaned up like a New Year Babe's behind. Couldn't have been more happy. It has sat in the safe for a long time and the other day I decided it was time to use it. A couple issues raised their heads.
1. It has a bit of a thread choke. Not bad, but needs addressing. (With the use of lead cast bullets) 2. The trigger is like dragging a feed trough sideways down a gravel road. GOT to be addressed. 3. These abomination of grips WILL be replaced with CT laser grips. Aint no 2 ways about it. If you have never used a set, you need to.
I am a rancher, full time and want to use this as my EDC. I had been carrying several different autos and revolvers including a cross draw Blackhawk in 44 special. Since I don't load outside of the "book", I haven't found my 44 special load although I have heard of the Skeeter and Keith loads for years. I may yet try them, but after having a CA Bulldog blow up in my hand with factory loads, I am a little scared to venture very far. So who would you suggest I send this revolver to for an action / trigger job, thread choke attention and some (probably) cylinder throat adjustment?
I have never had a revolver worked on, so I just plain don't know.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will start some phone calling when I get back from work today. Besides the bullet points I have already mentioned, what else should a "working Smith" have looked at?

And, while you are at it, have it converted to 45 Colt. Just kidding-sort of.

Yeah-I agree. he can pick up a 38-44 HD for that conversion should the caliber conversion itch hit him.
He will discover innumerable ways to spend his money poking around this site.

You CAN have the model 58 grow up to be a 45 Colt! That is just what this one did!

NO HE CAN NOT... He will have a much better time with it as a .41 than ANY other caliber.... 101...have you shot the gun at all? Almost sounds like you haven't.... Another vote for Jack...he has done one DA and one SA for me and his work is spot on... For loads, most any 210-220 with 8-9 grains of Unique will give you 950 and 1100 fps +- from a 4" barrel and excellent accuracy...and should shoot to the sights. GT bullets has a wide selection of .41 cast bullets and a lot in HP at excellent prices. And since you are new to .41...welcome to The Cult...just don't be lead astray by those who would have you desecrate a venerated object (a 58 is so defined).... castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?276144-41-Magnum-41-Special-Load-Data-CenterBob

Thank you for the warm welcome but I am pretty familiar with the 41 mag. I think I own 4.. Performance Center 57, this 58, a Blackhawk, a Contender, I am almost positive I am forgetting one somewhere... danged my eyes, coffee hasn't started working yet. I cast my own bullets. I have several MP Molds, NOE Molds, a Lyman and I think there is an RCBS in the gunroom (somewhere). Most common for me to load is a MP Molds 220 grain Semi Wad Cutter over 9 grains Unique. Last hog I shot with it was straight through both shoulders broadside at about 40 yards and it was a complete pass-through.
I have not shot THIS weapon much though. Not till earlier this week when I decided to start carrying it. I put 50 rounds through it and when I cleaned it is when I noticed the thread choke.
