I am thinking about my Next Project revolver, One option, i like is a 4.6 inch Ruger Bisley, 44 Special ! I am Curious what type of loads are putting through these guns ? I know its not a Magnum, But i bet its strong enough that i could push thing faster than factory ammo,
What Powders and Bullets are you guys working with, And what does the chroney tell you ? ...thanks ...tj

I have the 5.5" 44 Special Bisley Flattop. I shoot the 250 grn GT Hollow Point or Matt's WC Bullets over 17.0 grn of 2400.
Both produce 1200+ fps...

I use the three Kieth loads, 5 grains of Bullseye, 7.5 Unique and 17 grains of 2400 with a 250 SWC in my 5.5" Ruger Bisley 44 special. It likes them all. I'm just starting to play with HS6 in some of my revolvers and like it a lot so far. I haven't gotten around to trying it in the 44 Special yet.

Longshot is doing very well for me too. Matching 2400 Powder Ballistics with way less powder...

I'm not sure the barrel shank thickness of a 44 Blackhawk vs a GP100 44 but I'd imagine the Blackhawk's being thicker. Point being my Gp100s 44 special 5 inch barrel's barrel shank ended up crushed by semi hot 44 special loads. They were in Brian Pearce's tier 2 category. Ruger ended up fixing it and I sold it. Bought my self a Super Blackhawk. It was my fault completely but I was convinced that the Gp100 could handle them no problem. It did take more than a thousand of them before it finally gave in. So, like I said, definitely my fault. If I had only used those hot loads for hunting it would have lasted forever.

Nicely put, per the other thread, was wondering where you were coming from. Seems many of the M69's, L-framed 44mags are being used as 44spec's..stouter barrel shank than the GP's..

I use 3 different loads in all of my 44 specials, the summer time load being 5.5 grs of Winchester 231 with a Miha 243 gr HP that takes care of about 99% of what I encounter which is anything from ground squirrels, rock chucks, foxes, coyotes & the coveted badgers. I've taken 4-5 deer with the Skeeter load of 7.5 grs of Unique with the same bullet & then if I need to step it up I switch to 16 grs of Alliant 2400, again using the same 243 gr HP. In my guns this load is a bit more accurate than 17 grs, with very little drop in velocity. I don't shoot this load in my S&W 696, preferring to keep it on the tame side a bit more. Several six gun hunters sent me reports of using that bullet with 16 grs of 2400 on deer this fall with great results, some at a fair distance. Dick

Nice looking Revolver, For some reason I want the 4.6 inch... Thanks for the loads, i would likely loose 50 to 100 fps with the Shorter barrel, Still a potent Round, i like 2400 !

17 gr of 2400 is a bit much in my Flat Top. 16 gr is easier on shooter and gun and as Dick pointed out the game, with a well placed shot can't tell the difference. Have been shooting some HS 6 loads also that shoots well.

I’ve only had one 44 special, an FA 97. 8.0 grains of Power Pistol was easily the most accurate powder/weight for my revolver. Not sure why, but the gun often bit my hand so we ultimately parted ways.
Good luck!

I have a 4 5/8's as well & you never know, some times there's little if any difference in velocity, you just have to run them through the clock & see. I doubt you would see 100 fps difference though.
Many times with a FA if you grip it just a bit lower it won't bite you, at least that's been my experience with them. A friend was having that same problem with a new model 83 he had recently bought & after telling him to grip it just a bit lower it solved the problem & he was shooting it very well.

Not reloading for the flattop but for my 3" GP100 in .44 special and my 4" S&W 69 I have dedicated to .44 special. I am loading 180gr. XTP's over 10gr's of Vihtavuori N-350, very accurate in both revolvers. Dont own a chrono but looking at Vihtavuori's load data I should be getting around 1000fps.

99.9% of my 44 Special shooting is done with various 240-250 grain lead bullets and 8.2 grains of Power Pistol. They chrono right around 1000 fps with very low extreme spreads. Occasionally slip in a 265 LBT WFNGC with 16.5 gr. 2400 for 1150 fps in my 5.5" Ruger.
