Any updates on the SS BFR grip frames? Which would be recommended for a 475 LB? Thanks.

SBH with Ronnie's brass grip frame and Sack Peterson stag grips. I like it. Which model grip frame is that?

Ronnie, did you ever build one for a Colt? Ronnie We are prototyping frames and and Trig/hammers for the gen 1s, 2s and 3s as we speak. Finishing up the geometry and machining processes for the gen 1 hammers today! Looking good. R

Great article and perfect timing. I'm awaiting the SS BFR frames, so this article was a good primer on the designs.

Looking at my bfr with 2dogs brass front sight on it has me thinking. Bet it would look good with a finger grooved brass banana grip that's got a more rounded trigger guard and the top screws hidden like the ruger Bisley. I've got sbh-type trigger and hammer on it now and would keep them. Less likely to bury the sbh hammer in the web of your hand than the Bisley style under big recoil.

Ronnie was kind enough to make a new grip frame for me so I could put my avatar gun back to the configuration shown to the left. I used to have a Powers brass grip frame I modified to a birdshead shape along with ivory grips on the gun. Several years ago a good friend who is no longer with us mentioned how he thought that a brass birdshead and ivory would be perfect for one of his "shorty" OM single six gun. I still remember how excited Hank Hilo was when I told him he had talked me out o f the combo and I sent it to him not long before he passed away. I have an old set of ivories that has a ton of cream, white and tan in them and I have been saving them for a project such as this. When I talked to Ronnie about a grip frame we had to address the fact that I had a set of OM XR-3 ivories I wanted to use so his XR3-RED based Kbird would not work with the ivories. He was good enough to let me send him a set of OM XR-3 grips and he made this grip frame up for me so I could use the ivories. Being caught up in the shop I decided I would try my hand at fitting the new grip frame to the gun. Knowing this project was coming up I was lucky enough to find a Blackhawk frame that had been a cut up gun so the top strap was severed clear through. I figured it would be better to use this "mule" for the initial fitting then transfer to the actual Horvath gun for the final steps. By doing it that way and bolting the frame up to the mule main frame I could mark the excess with a fine tipped marker then get to work. Having a 3" by 3' long edge sander really cuts down the file time on a project like this! . Being a pretty slow moving guy, especially with a file in hand, I figured it took me about 3 hours to get the grip frame to match not only the gun but also a set of XR-3 sheep horn grips I sacrificed to the cause just so I could see how much to take off the XR-3 contours. I bet that the grip frame was bolted up to the gun at least 25 times during the final fitting process. Once I got the excess material of the grip section of the GF so if matched the grip contour I then marked the excess on the heel of the horn pieces and cut them down to match the birdshead shape of the lower part of the grip frame. Since the horn grips were sacrificial to the project I ended up thinning them down then filing and sanding them to match the grip frame. Overall I am pleased with how everything blended together and matched up. Since I want the ivories to fit really well I am sending the grip frame, the sheep grips and the ivory grips down to Zane and he will fit the ivories to the grip frame for me and dress up the horn panels. Since I want Zane to make sure he gets a good fit on the ivories I only cleaned up the brass surfaces to 600 grit for now. That way if he wants he can sand the ivory right to the grip frame or sand the grip frame down to match the ivories and not worry about messing up a high polish on the brass. Once it returns I will do a final polish on the grip frame itself. Like everyone else has stated, not only is Ronnie more than willing to create new products to meet customers needs but the product itself is so nice to use and bolts up perfectly. Ronnie, thanks for going to the effort to make yet another grip frame design. An old model three screw birdshead for a regular humped hammer!
