Decided I didn't care for the weaver base and mount I had been using on my BFR to mount the deltapoint. I don't have a M4x.7 tap so I couldn't use the screws that came with the dot. Need to pick up a couple screws at the hardware store and it'll be done. I think it has much cleaner lines now. Aaron

I agree - much cleaner looking! Prolly the cleanest looking mount I’ve seen for a “non- FA” gun to use with a reflex sight.

I have exactly the same gripe with my BFR. The weaver rail + rail mount on the mini red dot sights puts the sight too high over the bore for my liking and nobody seems to offer a BFR specific mount. I have been tinkering around and working on my own design. It still needs to be cleaned up quite a bit and the sharp edges knocked off but this is what I have been envisioning. My plan was to install the mount on the forward portion of the top strap and preserve the rear sight, utilizing the two available screws to keep it in place. I believe they will provide enough shear resistance to keep the sight in place without needing to have a dedicated recoil lug. I really do wish that someone would offer a better alternative for the BFR.

I considered having the mount be in the forward position, but I can't shoot irons very well at all so there isn't much point in my case. If you're worried about the screws shearing off you could put a dowel pin through the mount and into the top strap. I've seen it done on bolt actions with big cartridges and heavy scopes. I'm betting as light as the little dots are you won't have any issues though.

Raptor Engineering makes a red dot mount for Ruger flattops that works on a BFR with just a little fitting. I was able to remove a little metal underneath the screw hole and make a perfect fit to the BFR. It has held a DeltaPoint Pro for 588 rounds of 454 with no problems.

I originally looked at that sight. I didn't realize the flat top mount would fit the BFR. I might have to order one of those to check out. I considered having the mount be in the forward position, but I can't shoot irons very well at all so there isn't much point in my case. Aaron That would certainly keep the mount in position but I would prefer to not mill any additional holes in the top strap. As you noted, the sight and mount are not particularly heavy and the screws should keep it in place however I considered using a bit of epoxy between the mount and top strap to add additional shear resistance. If it becomes necessary to take off the mount a whack with a deadblow hammer would break the bond and any cured epoxy on the top strap could either be chipped off or cleaned up with acetone. BTW: how thick is the aluminum where the sight mount screws are installed? I would like to thin my mount out a bit more, but I was worried about not getting enough thread engagement.

The mount is right at .200" thick. It could probably be thinner. But I'm not sure there's enough benefit to do it again.
