As to the OP's question of whether the .41 Special fills any gap that sorely needed filling, I don't really think so. But I got one anyhow. It's a fine chambering on its own and it's fun to shoot!

(Now) Who will be the one to convince the Remingtons & Winchesters of the gun biz to put FACTORY loaded brass and ammo in the system so Ruger would get on board & tool-up for use in their midframe machinery! I think a better bet would be Federal or Hornady... Federal has more .41 rounds than Winchester, Remington and Hornady combined.... That said, Hornady seems to be more interested in boutique rounds... Hornady came up with the .480 and approached Ruger to put their name on it... Call it Special, ShortMag, Keith or KJS (Keith-Jordan-Skelton) and all the .41 Magnum owners will buy it for a target round... But I would SAAMI spec the round for 25-30K as the smallest guns that could be chambered for it (besides a custom Single-Six), the GP-100, S&W L-frame, Taurus Tracker, Ruger Flat Top could all be run safely with 1200 fps/210 grain loads... Basically what Keith was running in the .44 Special... Limiting the round to 1000 fps like the .44 Special basically is would be a disservice... One round with a cast 210 at 800 fps another about 1000 and one at 1200 would cover most everything... I have a Taurus Titanium Tracker...it is the PERFECT .41 Special... Bob

When I was first selling the first run of Star-Line .41spl brass I had made, Folks bought it because some indoor ranges had "no magnum" policies. Even mid range hand loads in magnum brass were not allowed on their indoor ranges. Maybe someone could get Hornady or Federal to come out with a special for range use...........

Because you can! The road less traveled my friend! Bingo! And the real reason 95% of all wildcat cartridges exist (and most factory cartridges for that matter). If we only had what we truly need there would only be a handful of cartridges. A stoutly built 45 Colt revolver and a 30-06 rifle would serve us all quite well but what fun would that be?

svo...you can load .41 Magnum brass down and not loose any accuracy but it is just in certain platforms one can not use .41 Magnum brass with certain bullets, like Keith and LN LBT designs without deep seating them. I may well build a 41 Special, but my thought process is the same as yours. You'd have to be crafty to out do my FA97 41 Magnum. When I shoot Specials in it, it groups as well as the Magnums. I've had the same thought about a FA97 being about the perfect .41 Special. Of course in a flat top Ruger you would have six holes in the cylinder.

I'll post the rest of the pics later, here's Mr. Taffins guns I've LUSTED after that unfluted SAA 41Spcl for YEARS!!! That's reason enough to justify a 41Spcl right there.

Oh,that's just dandy. Now you've got me thinking... I can pretty easily bodge a .41 magnum barrel onto one of these and turn my own .41 Special cylinder from 4140 to use with a Kirst gated breech ring.... Might be pretty slick...

Oh, speaking of .41 Special, I needed a new bandsaw blade today, and the range is right down the street from the place I buy them, so... 170gr SJHPs at 1000fps, rapid-fire at 5 yards. Big Fun!
