Burnston.... fine writeup. More particularly, fine discipline to take that short sight radius and make it sing at nearing 3/4 football field. There is no such thing as an easy short and your work proves it. David Bradshaw

Thanks everyone for the fine comments. I doubt if I'd have ever given this a try had I not found this forum three years ago and started haunting all your posts. As a side note, I might add that I am going to start exploring bullet alternatives this pistol. I still have a slight feeling that this could have turned into a wound and chase situation a lot easier than I have allowed myself to acknowledge.

However, don’t second-guess a good shot unless deep down you know that it was lucky. You’ve now hauled up to the vittles club with a sixgun, and by your account set about through SERIOUS PRACTICE. There are no shortcuts to sharpshooting. I know some spectacular deer trackers who would never undertake their craft with a sixshooter. Hours in, these woodsmen get closer to a deer than anyone else is capable of, yet would never trade their carbine for a revolver. These are not champion marksmen, but no one with half a brain would volunteer to challenge them in the woods. Still, the prospect of following a buck with a sixgun, a buck that knows you’re there, drives the challenge into an abstract zone that only those who’ve been there with a revolver understand. I have not heard of a bowhunter tracking a whitetail, jumping it and nailing it with an arrow. You’d have to step through the woods with the bow cocked. In Hollywood they do it with an edit, and nowadays animation, but you can’t carry that equipment while tracking a deer. Dick Thompson has done more than about anyone to correlate the specifics of bullet hardness to penetration and expansion in game. I do not subscribe to super-hard bullets on deer, either from revolver or rifle. The same applies to most pigs and certainly black bear. By closing the gap between iron-like hardness and plastic deformation, cast bullets subjected to the annealing heat of POWDER COAT have revolutionized revolver performance. It is a small, quiet revolution. “.... this could have turned into a wound and chase situation a lot easier than I have allowed myself to acknowledge.” A great recognition that marksmanship is the first job of a handgun hunter. Pretty sure that`s a fixed sight S&W and to make your first handgun kill on a fine Texas buck with it at 68 is well done deal in my book...

One of these days, with a little more experience I'd like to combine woodsman and sixgunner to the point where I can completely leave blinds and stands behind. I have the fortune of having access to thousands of acres where this type of hunting can be conducted, a privileged many do not have. I've briefly spoken with Mr. Thompson about his powder coating and he's offered to send me samples. I believe I'll call him for more serious conversation after this season is over.

Thank you for the compliment. It is indeed fixed sighted, which turned out to be a positive thing. The stationary sights forced me into extensive work to find a load adequate to the gun. Also, I hope this doesn't color your fine compliment in a negative way, but this is an Oklahoma white-tail. My roots are Texan and I've hunted plenty of them at "home," but the woman I married is a Sooner, which contributed to my sad but necessary exodus.
