A buddy invited me out to his lease for some doe management hunts. They're way over carrying capacity for the land and are having to supplement feed quite a bit. These were both old does, one ten years based on her tags (formerly breeder does released into the wild) and bigger than most bucks where I normally hunt. I took the first doe with a 13 inch G2 Contender with a 7-30 Bullberry barrel topped with a Leupold 2.5-8. She came out at 260 yards and I shot her when she got to 225 yards and the wind died down for a moment. She bucked when hit and made it about 20 yards into the woods. I've been trying to burn through some Federal factory 120 grain ammo and have the gun pretty well doped out to 300 using it, so that's what I was comfortable shooting at this range. I'll be using 120 ballistic tips in the future, but these worked. The second pic is from where she was shot looking back to the blind. The next morning we were running a little late so I left the pistols behind and only took my Kimber Montana in 7-08. IIRC it's just over 5lbs scoped and loaded with 160 grain partitions. The shot was down at an angle from an elevated blind, maybe 100 yards. She was facing us, head down eating, and I aimed at the base of her neck between the shoulder blades. The bullet didn't exit because it got diverted down the rib cage, but it split her heart in two and got plenty of lung and bone. She flopped over dead where she stood. Population managed, meat harvested, and clean kills made for a great hunt. Getting to use a pistol was just icing on the cake.
