Have been chasing an Axis buck on a ranch down SW of OKC. The first 3 days, literally daylight to dark, never even got a glimpse of him. Saw his ladies a time or two as they crossed the two track. Came home, rested a little, changed out pistols and waited for cold weather to rid the trees of all the greenery. Finally got a call Monday from the cowboy who doubles as a ranch guide saying the leaves were pretty much gone and would I want to come down Wednesday and give it another go. Got down at ranch HQ Wednesday after lunch in plenty of time to do some driving and glassing. Didn't see the buck or his ladies that evening, but told Denny I'd meet him at the 'shed' Thursday morning around 5:30 and go with him as he made his feed route. Showed up Thursday morning. got in the feed truck and off we went. Made 1 pasture, nada. Made the 2nd pasture and again nothing. Hmmmm, not looking to promising. At the next pasture had Denny drop me next to a dry wash that split the pasture and go ahead and make his feed circle then pick me up on his way out. Sit up in a thicket against a cedar tree where I could watch an open area between the wash and a brushy ridge line covered in cedars. After about 20 mins I could hear the old feed truck bouncing and rattling along the two track on the back side of the ridge line when I noticed an Axis doe step out about 100ds from where I sat. !, 2. 3, 4 does ease out into the clearing. Get my sicks up and set, Contender resting in the fork and range the does, 103yds. 5, and there he is. Settled the crosshairs on his shoulder for a 'no track 'um' shot and let go a 6.8spc, 115gr Speer Gold Dot powered by 28.2grs H322. Bang, flop and about a 5yd scoot as he pushed toward the cedars and it was done. Ranging from where he was standing to where my 'tree' stood showed 103yds by Nikon range finder.
