on't understand it myself Dick, just always been different than most in the winter. Most realize I don't say it to argue today, and realize I really do love this time of year better than warm weather. I don't like it as much today with the warmer temps, and do miss some of the heavier storms in the winter, hell about 5 years ago I fell through a frozen creek, only about 3 feet deep, and didn't take long to jump out being only about 6 feet across, trying to cross instead of taking a 1/4 mile detour down and back to cross at a farmers lane crossing to get to where I wanted to deer hunt. I got a bit cold that day after about 3 or 4 hours in temps just under 0*, and walking got kinda noisy frozen from the knees down, but barely got the sweats damp above the 400 gram Danner Eastridge boots I hunt in when it gets cold, what made it bad though was I had to drive about 20 miles with the heater on high to thaw the bibs and pants I had on to get to the frozen boot laces and stop at a gas station to get my bibs pants and slightly damp boots off, had a cheap pair of camo bibs with zippers on the legs, couldn't get the boots off, couldn't get the pants off I had over my sweat pants and had to survive the high heat to thaw all that out.
Even when I am on stand in January bow season I just don't seem to have trouble with my hands getting cold, but think warm jacket or even sweatshirts with closed nit cleaves help keep the blood warm going to and from the hands. But even when they get cold after a short time they seem to be warm again and then I'm good the rest of the day. I'm covering a crossing just where the ice stops on this creek here.
But here after a long drag and late recovery the end of January well below zero that night, my hunting buddy did catch me trying to warm em up a bit after using that metal Pole Cat walking stick as my drag handles, but I don't think I even had gloves with me on that hunt.
I love those kind of seasons over what we are seeing this year, and have hunted less because of them. My wife is the only reason I never moved to Alaska when I got hurt and retired in 1991. These next 4 months are always my favorite times of year. The heat is harder on me after turning 60 than the cold ever was, it is causing more stiffness and aches the older I get, but the colder it gets, the more I hunt these days.
I fish the early ice out Walleye run sometimes on snowy days in March or early April, but after the Blue bill bed in late May I mainly just ride the HD or go to the range under the awning looking fer the coolest place I can find. I head to the UP for a week er two in August trying to get as close to Lake Superior as I can most days just have that cool breeze. I've headed south one winter 50 or so years ago, and that was the last time I ever did that, longest 2 weeks of winter I ever spent.
I for sure am one of the rare ones when it comes to favorite weather! Like I say I have some lightweights I wear sometimes when I'm stationary, but seldom ever want them in the way when I'm using them, that usually is enough to keep them comfortable.
