My wife is intrigued by the power, range, precision of the 50. Big bucks and not sure she would like after first shot.
Any recommendations for a rifle, scope, ensemble that would be pretty accurate out to at least 1,000 yards for under $2,000 total?

Groo here Start researching "Long Range Rifle" for what works. The 416 Barett Will shoot with the Big 50 but is not as large or kick so hard. The Big 50 is designed from WW1 anti-tank rifles. The best being German with a 30% increase in performance. Someone got smart and ask JMB to design a MG [aka the M2] for it. In WW2 our planes were using Anti-tank guns as MG.[no wonder tanks / trucks/ planes/ and even smaller war ships were not safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!] SO- when you touch of a 50BMG it feels like a cannon------IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on what style rifle you are wanting. Weāve taken the 6.5CM to about 2,000 but you need altitude to really do it consistently. $2000 will be a tight budget to do it right. But if youāre looking for just something to occasionally plink to 1000, you should be ok. Iāll warn you though....the ālong rangeā game is addicting. We start our matches with a cold bore at 1,600 and go out from there š 1000 yards is an easy kit to put together if thatās all you plan to do with it. Lots of good options out there. Donāt miss looking at the Tikka guns as well, havenāt seen one that wouldnāt shoot well yet. You need to decide on a caliber and go from there. Savage makes a 338 Lapua that does well. My buddy put 5/5 center plate at 2000 yards the last time we were practicing together. The glass is going to be really important. We use all First Focal Plane in my group but others use SFP so that is your choice. I just prefer to give calls in mils rather than āyouāre one plate highā etc. we know our substentions are always the same in the scope with FFP, which is nice when youāre on the clock and want to hold for windage rather than adjust each shot. Winds change fast so itās nice to know you can just make a quick hold change and have the next one on itās way.
Iāve watched my buddy with the Savage and a few others hit the 3000 yard plate with the 338 as well. I only took it to 2200 personally as did my 11YO son. So, itās a good round with minimal recoil in these heavier rifles and good brakes. But itās just a gateway gun into the next level that you will eventually jump into. Hahaha.
Shoot me a PM if you have specific questions and Iāll help anyway I can.

Stumbled across a Ruger PSR in 6.5 creedmore with leupold mounts, vortex scope, and Caldwell bipod today on consignment for $1,750. Looks almost like new. Gunshop guy said it is an $800+ scope. Thought I'd try to find out more about it. What do you think?

Do you know the model of the scope? They make a bunch of them. FFP or SFP etc. the 6.5 will be a fun one for 1500 and under. They can be pushed further but wind will wreak havoc on you of course. Also, easy to find quality Ammo for that round!!!

No. I may try to stop back in there tomorrow to find out more. Anything I should specifically look for?

Does it have to be a 50 cal? F class benchrest competitors shoot out to 1000 yds with 223s & 308s in F-T/R Division. One of the more popular combos seems to be a fast-twist .223 and 80-ish grain bullets. We don't get to do this in my state since farm land is too valuable to shoot on.

Doesn't have to be 50. My big fear with 50 is she'd be afraid to actually shoot it.
I studied up on some of the leading rounds for long distance shooting; but keep coming back to whether she'd actually shoot it more than once. Now thinking it may be better to start her off with a 224 valkyrie in an AR or a 6.5 creedmore in a bolt action. If she didn't really get into the long range target shooting, they'd still be useful for groundhogs and coyotes. If she did, they'd probably be a good intro for her.

FWIW: We've had some farmland go for around $14,000 per acre within just a few miles of here. We have quite a few acres that have been appraised at $9,000 per acre; but we also have some that was appraised at much less. Most of the land is either flat and not safe to shoot or hilly and tree covered so you cant shoot long range.

FWIW: I realized today that I hadn't provided an update on the Ruger 6.5 in the gunshop. When I stopped back in, it had been sold.

There will be another... FWIW when I had the urge I bought a Savage. Mine did not have the target shooting trigger so I bought the Rifle Basics trigger. Picked up Vortex Razor 4.5-27 Gen II FFP MOA glass. Had it a couple of years and have never fired it. Haven't installed the trigger or mounted the scope. Retail wise a $1000 rifle, $200 trigger, $3400 scope. Worked out to be just under $3000 total out the door. Then brass, bullets, dies.... Painful but fun! Did effectively kill the urge though...

I used to own a Tikka T3X in 6.5CM with the bull barrel. It can be had for less than $1000 + glass.
Very first 5 shots with factory ammo yielded a .5 inch 100y group (143gr ELX). I know thereās a lot more involved in shooting at a 1000 but Iāve never seen a rifle print like that with no experimenting.
Donāt rule out the Tikka action it was one of the slickest my limited experience has ever seen.
