I have never had a 30 caliber that would not shoot a 150 grain Speer Hot Core well. I have never tried it in a magnum ' but in .300 savage .308 Winchester and 30,06 it has allways shot well with the most common powders. And it's performance on mule deer base been just great. My current 30.06 is a very clean JC Higgins model 50. It has a VX 3 2.5X8. Strangely I had a great load worked up using a 165 grain Sierra Boat tail. I took the rifle out if the stock and put a timney trigger in. It needed a big chunk of in letting Done to fit the timney. Put it back together and the same load that was giving just over a 1/2 inch at 100 yards was now shooting 2.5. So with 3 weeks till dear season I went back to my tried and true. The 150 grain Speer over 58 grains of IMR 4350. 1st group 1.25 at 100 yards. Adusted point of impact next group .80. So I loaded up 20 for deer season and 20 more with 58.5 grains. I have had rifles to shoot great with 50 but 48 will do just fine. If 48.5 shoots as well I will use it. I expect about 2900 from the hotter load. If I can't get it I might as well use a .308. My old savage 99 will give me an inch at 2800 with the same bullet. And I just love thaat old 99f. It's one of the last ones with the safety at the lever. Only problem with the old girl is that I need to use fresh factory brass to push it that fast. I also have a CZ 557. .308 that is just excellent. But a little modern for my taste...tj3006.

Hornaday 165gr Spire point. It'll work on Elk too!

Hornady SST for off the shelf ammo.
Accubonds are great too, I have a few Winchester supreme for my 270 and 7mm tucked away.

Anything with Nosler in the name is my favorite 30 caliber bullet. I've had wild success with the Ballistic tips from 125gr all the way up to 180gr and Accubonds in all weights between.

Nosler makes great bullets ! so does hornady ! But i need a box of 200 grain Accubonds for my 300 H&H. but for mule deer , and I shot one a couple years ago i am sure was about 250 lbs I will stick with the inexpensive Speer, dead is dead !

There is a guy on GB that sells bulk Nosler for about half price on Partitions, I’ve bought 338, and 30’s from him with no issues.

Not the most aerodynamic bullet, but the 150gr Lapua Mega bullet is awesome in performance on game.

You guys didn't get the memo ? You can only kill deer, and they have to be at least 350yds away, with something called a Creedmoor. Back east ya gotta have a 450 Bushmaster something or other. LOL.

Guess I didn't get that memo ! To be clear, my one and only scoped centerfire rifle is a Winchester made 1917 Enfield in 30-06.

I like the old stuff, Not that the new stuff does not work, but ever since the ultra mags and Ballistic reticle scopes came out , i sure see lots more wounded deer hobbling around the forest when i am elk hunting. I have shot more deer than i remember , and all but about 3 were close enough to take with a 30/30.

I wasn’t aware there were any jacketed bullets in the market other than Nosler Partitions...

There is a lot of hype over hunting bullets. Deer dont wear body armor or bed down in bunkers, at least where I hunt. Lead balls and pointed sticks were killing them just fine until the internet came along. It's not cool to hunt a animal any more you have to shoot if from another zip code. Having said that, I always prefer 150gr. bullets by Sierra in 30-30, .308, 30-06. I do like Nosler Ballistic Tips also. I really dont see the need for high BC's and Strongly constructed bullets for deer. Well... not normal sized whitetail anyway. My .2 cents......
