I would take the 696. Outfit it with a $25 set of Barami Hip Grips and you can carry that sucker IWB, invisibly, without fear of losing it. The K-frame round-butt fits the L-frame gun...same size. Barami's are ALWAYS my first choice. And after buying and trying lots of holsters...my best choice. If I was a hunter, out in the woods, that'd be a different story. But I'm talking CCW. Sonny

This is the one I would carry due to weight and proven one shot stop power! ;D

I would choose the 696........ because I have one. I've never felt undergunned with it and a couple speedloaders.

And taking us off course a bit....Do they make a set of grips like the ones shown above on Wickerbill's gun (and my 686) that fit on a round butt N-frame? Yes, I believe they do. I have a buddy that has a 629 Lew Horton with a set just like them. Bill

This is the 24 that I had mentioned the other day. He wants $850 if anyone is interested.

Good question. I would say the 696 but you have limited the 686 with a six shot. I know you can get a 686 7 shot and I am pretty sure S&W makes an 8 shooter. That being said, I would take seven 357 rounds over five 44 special in a CCW piece. Mark

I would and have used the 696. I have also used a 2.5 in model 19 and a 3 in model 13. For self defense they all will get the job done. Gary is right. The one you shoot the best. Currently for me it’s a 329 pd.

I'd take the 357 - proven performance.
I prefer my model 19 - Glock.

I think Buffalo Bore offers a .44 Special that is a 250gr Keith style bullet at an advertised 1000. It should make a great carry load for a mid frame .44 Special. I don't think I'd use it in a Charter Bulldog. Frank

I certainly enjoy and feel comfortable with the .44 Special, but looking at what is in my safe, there are six shot .357 snubs, but no five shot .44 Specials. Looks like an empty spot that needs to be filled...

I would reco the 696. On this forum, I have listed a number of loads that I have tried, after reading a great article by Brian Pearce in an older HANDLOADER issue. Here is the thread: singleactions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=da&action=display&thread=2680&page=2I love my 696, and like everyone else, 7.5 grains of Unique, the old Skeeter load, is quite sufficient for a walk in the park. I love these Barami Hip Grips, and have them on four or five of my smaller revolvers. and yes, photo #2 is mirror-reversed. I've used these things for 30 yrs. They don't slip; they don't fall out whether walking, driving, etc., because the cylinder is inside the pants at, or below, belt level. Sonny

I have a certain love for the .44 Special, but am comfortable with the .357 mag, having actually used it against a human being. That one shot was devastating; the wound gruesome, and I have seen quite a few bullet wounds. A recent local street robbery involved five bad guys, and it seems trendy for robbers to operate in teams of three-plus. I would not give up that sixth shot to get a slightly bigger bore, in the same-sized weapon. Not that five shots is a bad thing; five shots of .357 mag in an SP101 is a favorite of mine, though I tended to carry two SP101s. (Once I finally settled on a P229 as my permanent duty pistol, and obtained good concealment leather, I started carrying P229s 24/7/365, with the snubbbies being used only occasionally.)
In the L-frame size range, I recently bought a 3" GP100, with adjustable sights, a rare configuration. It may or may not be my retirement carry sixgun.

I personally would go with the 696 -- I want the bigger hole provided by the larger caliber. Here's a picture of my Lew Horton M29 -- it's actually pleasant to shoot with .44 specials......... ;D
