I'm just getting into reloading for my .45 and .475 revolvers and was wondering if anyone has any experience with Speer deep curl bullets? good or bad. Thanks

Others have posted good results with them, I do not use them, but have not heard any bad reports.

ok, Thanks! I've seen some good buys on them and just kinda wondered if they were good bullets.

I have shot and shoot the 325gr for hunting in my 480 Ruger. I find them to be very accurate, but I also found that they didn't expand as I wanted them too when I shot a 200lb black bear at 60 yards. They had a complete pass through but when I skun out the animal, I couldn't find any signs of expansion within the animal, I also didn't hit any major bones, just tissue for the most part.
That experience isn't going to stop me from using them, I still have confidence in them.
I also have a supply of the 275gr HPs that I haven't gotten around to shooting yet. I've heard that they're not nearly as accurate so I haven't wasted my time with them since the 325's did so well.

The prices reflect that they are plated rather than jacketed. I've no problem with that and have gone thru several boxes of both weights and more in stock here and likely will load some more today for the Alaskan that is inbound. Here on this forum, Squigz has put 3 of the 325gr ones thru a bear last year. Full penetration but no sign of expansion. Best of luck to you. Ha ! Guess Squigz types faster than I do.

Here is what Powder Valley has listed in their description of the 45 cal 250 grain Deep Curl:
"Speer® electrochemically bonds the DeepCurl® jacket to the lead core to create the toughest, most accurate handgun hunting bullet possible. Pre-formed petals expand reliably and consistently and the bullet’s high weight retention ensures deep penetration on heavy-bodied game."
I thought I had used them before, but I used the 45 cal 260 grain Magnum bullets. They are inexpensive and shoot accurate out of my FA83 454. I've never pushed them to what FA uses as maximum, but there was a lot of H110 in that case. At 50 yards I was impressed. No idea how they would work on critters...

Plan on using up a box as break in loads, lite loads, of the 275gr HP's first. For the Alaskan that's inbound now. Will use CFE-P and may even choke up on'em. Seat, crimp to over the ogive. If I find joy and happiness there I'll post and let ya's know. I would guess that if you really pushed that bullet with H110 or such and whacked a deer broadside it would be a bit messy. "Deer Grenade".

"Deer Grenade". Speer's load data doesn't show test barrel lengths on their website, but they're claiming close to 1700 fps with the 275's. I've been wanting to push the limit and see; but from my experience with the 325's, as I started pushing the velocity higher I lost consistency and accuracy of the bullet. It would be interesting to see what it would do to a whitetail at those speeds though.

I've a 2012 Alliant Powder guide here. I've NO experience with their Power Pro 300 MP, but they list a max velo of 1910 fps. They don't list gun/barrel length, but yikes ! With 2400 they get to 1560. I don't want my 480's to be 454's..

Those bullets are jacketed, not plated. Don't know how that got started. Have not shot them on game but they are good shooting bullets.

The Speer deep curls have worked very well for me. I have shot a lot of deer with the 275 gr. out of a Super Redhawk .480. Many of the deer dropped where shot some ran 15 to 20 yards. I think for deer they work well. Heavier animals I would go to the 400 gr. Jess B.

Sorry about the double post. I do not know how to delete it. The velocity I was getting out of 7 1/2 inch barrel was around 1650 using W 296.

I haven’t done a lot of testing, but they were $10 cheaper than Hornady XTPs for the 41 Mag here, so figured was worth a shot... again, haven’t finished testing yet, but seem accurate enough initially.
