There it is. Define your Single Action for Self Defense. If you had to carry a SA or a pair or SA's all day every day for TWO LEGGED rannys what would you pick? Old Model? New Model?? Caliber? Would you like something that is not made? Looking for a concept here. We better go ahead and add in a companion lever action carbine. Winchester? Marlin?? Caliber? Barrel length?
My mind wants to wander back to the Croft light weights....

this one has been on my belt now for a couple years... IMO, perfect 45 Colt Ruger Montado in polished stainless, barrel custom cut to 2"... ejector housing removed & thumb nail crescents cut into the cylinder... this model had a Birdshead grip frame attached, & currently wears a pair of checkered buffalo horn grips... frame was lightened / recontoured to remove the ejector housing mount... Matts bullets 250 grain wadcutters ride in the cylinder...

Yeah, MWM has been ahead of us down this path ! I've a 44spec polished SS NM Vaq Sheriff that has been CCW'd for 2 legged vermin. Got a holster from the guy on Rugerforum that passed a few years back, went by some form of contraction of short barrel. Just can't recall. Matt's 250gr cast HP on 7grs of Unique usually to be found in the cylinder. A Marlin 1894 44 is nearby. A 12 ga coach gun too.

My choice FA m97 3.75” 357 or 45acp w/ejt. Or Reeder bandit addition 45acp/45lc Or TLA border spl 44mag
I’m partial to having the ejector rod on SAs don’t need or want a stuck case in a reloading situation.

Of the SAs I currently own it would be this one- Custom Uberti Richards-Mason .38 Special 'Avenging Angel.' I would load it with Buffalo Bore's 158gr. LSWCHP (short barrel) loads- perhaps the most potent standard pressure .38 ammo available. It's more compact than a SAA-frame gun, good handling, good shooting. Also the hammer-nose can be set down between case-heads pretty securely, so it will carry six rounds. 2" Barrel, Magnumwheelman's nail-nicks in the back of the cylinder for extracting spent shells, birdshead grip, slicked-up internals. If I were building one from scratch? Cimarron Lightning .38 Special conversion with a birdshead grip, 2" barrel, extractor and extractor housing on the frame removed, nail-nicks in the cylinder... Similar to Magnumwheelman's set-up, only one size smaller.

Uberti Birdshead, like I had,in 45 Colt, but with checkered grips and lowered hammer. 270SAA penta-hp's with "Appalachian American" ballistic tips...aka Bondo filled cavities, and Herco. Cross draw holster. Very accurate short barreled little gun when my eyes cooperated.
Somebody made me a deal I couldn't refuse.

NMFT, mid-frame, 44 special, Sheriff configuration with a snub barrel and no ERH (if carrying a pair), night sights or white outline rear/vertical white line front, aluminum bird's head grip frame, SBH hammer, action job, scalloped inside of the loading gate, free spin pawl.
Sedgley lift out cylinder if I'm just carrying one SA and money is no object.

I think the answer lies more in the holster than the gun. I am not going to carry it IWB - though if I did, it would be Mexican. I have several good OWB shucks that would allow me to carry it high and tight, concealed under a blazer or even a fairly short jacket. So, I have quit trying to shorten the gun. I would (and often do) carry a FA 97 4-1/4" in 357 or 44 Special, adjustable sights. I also have no problem with a 4-3/4" Colt SAA in 44 Special. If I had carte blanche and a spare gun to work over … I might cut a SAA down to 4" or 4-1/4", ejector rod too, and mount a more visible dovetail serrated ramp front sight. I would not worry about the butt, or remodeling the hammer. As for rifles, I get the "companion lever gun" business, but don't particularly enjoy them. I like a rifle to be a RIFLE. So the accompanying rifle would be my 1926 Winchester 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine that, so far, has killed everything it has been fired at … a pile of raccoons up in a pine tree, a coyote or two, a bobcat, and a hog. It is lucky and reliable and acts like a RIFLE.
Again, leather is as important to the setup. My good Barranti or Leahy belt, and one of Barranti's Mountain Companion holsters, the one with the tension screw, no strap, with a split cut to allow it to place over a belt loop. When carrying a rifle, I worry more about spare ammunition for my rifle than I do my handgun, so I would carry a cartridge slide for the rifle on my belt, and a speed strip with ammunition for the revolver, elsewhere.
That doesn't mean I don't really, really like those Lightweight SAA's … If I had the money, and the spare gun, and the patience, I would send one to Bowen or Bobby and mill down the frame, recoil shield etc, maybe bisley the hammer spur, and go in style. Of course, if I did that, I would then find a true "Trapper" Winchester, from way back with the barrel shorter than 16" … aren't those an NFA exception as an antique?

I also agree the "right" kind of holster is important... My revolver rides high & tight ( on a good gun belt ) in a custom holster I made... after 2-3 years it looks a little more worn & comfortable... the gun is retained with a leather lace, attached to the holster on one end, with the other end going over the hammer spur & between the gun belt, holster, & my jeans, with a little extra to allow occasional snugging as needed... tightening the belt puts friction on the lace, & allows me to hang upside down on the "monkey bars" if I needed to... after a couple years wear, I'm completely happy with how it fits, rides, & is retained... in the next year or so, I may decide to replace the leather lace, as this one has gotten quite flexible over the years, & I liked it better when when it was stiffer

Bob Wright carries a SA. Hope he shows up and chimes in. Me, trying to decide where this thread is going, Reality, what I really have and use, as I posted, or pie in the sky.

I always click "like" when MWM posts a pic of that holster. Just gotta. Looks like it came from the south end of a north bound T-Rex.

Thanks Steve... it's just some old steer shoulder... it's lined with buckskin the medallion is a button made from a cut off nickel 45 Colt case, with brass threaded rod threaded in through the primer hole... acts as a stress point reinforcement, like the old Levis had at the pockets...

Definitely an OWB modern pancake holster. Barrel long enough for an ejector rod. Stainless, one of the original Vaqueros in .44 Magnum stoked with Specials or a .45 Colt. Levergun to match with a Coach gun or my Model 12 Winchester in 12 Gauge.
