A left handed Remington short action build is in my future. I'll do a varmint weight 220 Swift. I don't know what your wanting to use your future build for as far as hunting goes but if I was looking at a short action big game build it might be a 250 or 300 Savage. Maybe a 338/08 or 358 Winchester.

I keep kicking around the idea of an 18" 338 Federal bolt gun.

I recently bought a left handed M700 short action receiver for a future build. But I dont know what to build. Your 400 Whelen sounds really cool, but Im kind of a wuss when it comes to heavy recoiling rifles. As far as recoil the 400 Whelen is pretty much a pussycat. A little more than a comparable weight 35 Whelen and a fair amount less than a comparable weight 375 H&H. My old 375 weighed 9.5 pounds and was pretty nice to shoot. My current one is a lefty Remington KS Mountain rifle and weighs an ounce or two over seven pounds. It ain't so much fun. My 400 weighs 8.5 pounds.

I have a Ruger No.1 in 45-70 and that dude beats me when I load it in the levergun pressure levels. But its a light weight rifle also. Im not done playing with it just yet.

Anything in a short action, specifically the 308 rifle family around 7 lbs with scope. Only one I'm missing is the 7mm-08 because the deal just hasn't crossed my path and a 25 Souper which will have to be custom built.

I have too many options to think about... but a couple of my favorites are the 17 Fireball custom Remington 700, & my 338 Winmag Browning Stainless Stalker... but, my original oldest favorite is my 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun

I kinda drifted away from rifles for a while about 3 years ago, but before I did, I was playing with rifles to shoot 600 yards +. The last one I built used a Stiller action, Bartlien barrel 1-7" twist, and a Manners stock. The caliber is a 223AI throated for 80+ grain Bergers. Just for fun, I had a brake installed and can watch my own trace.
I started the long range rifle thing with a Gradous 308 and gradually went smaller in caliber. After the 308, I went to 6.5 Creedmoor, then 6.5 Lapua, then 6×47 Lapua, and the last was the 223AI.
The only one I built to hunt with was a 6.5 Creedmoor.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a spectacular hunting cartridge. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot long range with mine yet. But I have killed a truck load of caribou with it. Having come from hunting with large caliber rifles in the past. I was really amazed at how well it worked . Just a really great all around rifle cartridge !

The 6.5 Creedmoor is also a spectacular accuracy cartridge. I will give the edge on accuracy to the 6.5×47L, but it's slight and I believe a result to small rifle primer/small flash hole Lapua brand cases available for the 6.5×47L. Now that Lapua makes a SR/small flash hole case for the Creedmoor, I suspect it's a wash. I got around the SR/SFH thing with the Creedmoor by necking down, neck turning, and fireforming Lapua 308 Palma brass. It made a difference, but not worth the trouble. Had I known Lapua would make the Creedmoor brass, I'd never gone to the trouble.

i used to own a 6.5cm and 120/140gr nosler bt. it was a one-shot killer on close cover deer. back in the day , i also used 22-250 brass when there was no 6.5cm hornady brass available.

I did also . When I got mine, obummer had just been elected and components were scarce. Jon Barsness had done an article about the Creed and detailed how he made brass for it from 22-250 brass using the COW method. I just copied his recipe and had ready made brass for my 6.5 Creedmoor. As I wasn't competing with my rifle. Some of the nth degree of nuance and accuracy were not really necessary. Having ammo was of utmost importance. Now I use factory headstamped 6.5 Creedmoor brass.

I converted a Remington 700 to another caliber from 22-250... I think 6.8 SPC ( so I have that bolt extra, as IIRC I needed to change bolts ) so that bolt would work for a 6.5 Creedmoor in a Remington 700???
anyone have any interest in that factory Remington 700 bolt???

I cannot narrow it down to one rifle / cartridge combination. Though, today at the range it was my 416 Ruger 20" Alaskan in a McMillan stock, with 350 grain TSX handloads. This is one of my favorite moose hunting rifles. This combination works very well in the terrain that I hunt in. I really like the rifle and cartridge. It is an easy handling rifle and it groups very. A pleasurable rifle to hunt with in the tangles.

I'm a big fan of my Springfield Armory M1 Garand in 30/06, with S&B M2 ball it will hold 8 shots into a golfball sized group @ 100 yds.
