In comparison to this rifle for moose, maybe my 416 Remington Magnum isn't as unreasonable as I thought.

Not a bolt gun and not a magnum, but I do I do enjoy this 45-70 Sharps. I load it with a 525 gr Hock nose pore bullet with 67 grs of Swiss 1 1/2F blackpowder. It might not be a belted magnum, but it will shoot stim to sturn thru a whitetail. Bill

Nice rifles !! .416Rigby was one of the cartridges i looked upon before i decided to go whit 425 WR. And 45-70 is never wrong i had a Marlin 1895 in that caliber but due to Swedish regulations one is only allowed 6 rifles for hunting you can apply for Moore but it is seldom worth the fuss. So it had to go when the lust for a more African inspired caliber and rifle became to great, but i still miss it some time Thanks for charing Happy hunting Mathias

Why in the world would they choose to limit you to six rifles? Do they limit you to the number of handguns or shotguns? Bill

Oh Yes shotguns or rifles doesn't mater 6 is the number for hunting. And as for hand guns you can have 4 for competition they sense handgun hunting is not allowed

Mathias, what's the farthest you might have to carry a moose after you shoot it? Here in Alaska, one moose will teach you that the carcass had better be close to the boat or truck or somewhere you can drive your 3 or 4 wheeler up next to. They're a lot of work, especially if you shoot them in a swampy or brushy place.

Not so far actually. I will make a brief description of how we hunt i say we because moose hunting in Sweden is mostly a group effort and we are 12 members in "my" team. In the morning the leader of the hunt decides what area to hunt and tell us where to sit, when everybody is in place the chosen dog and handler start to walk through the area. And when he calls in that he has walked through the area we gather and have some coffee and eat and choose a new area to hunt and start over again. When someone has shoot a moose 3-4 guys gather there to gut it and someone goes after our "moosedrager" a tracked vehicle we use to carry the moose out to the nearest road and waiting trailer for transport to our slaughterhouse where we skin the animal and quarter it. That pretty much how my moose hunting is done feel free to ask questions Mathias

I had asked the guy I sold this to when this thread was active to send me photos as I rarely take pictures of my guns. This is a 500 A Square that Alphin built for me in with his traditional tree trunk stock and barrel mounted scope. At the time I objected to the scope as in those days I used open sites on all dangerous game guns feeling anything that reduces field of view and distorts distance a handicap. After a close disaster on an elephant charge which ended in my drilling two .510 diameter 707 grain holes from stern to lungs on a jumbo. You cannot say the caliber lacked penetration. Anyway I liked the caliber not the package so I sent it off to Frank Wells who restocked it added steel open sights, a muzzle brake and an internal stock recoil reducer. This was the worst recoiling rifle I had ever shot and I also had a .577 Farquensen that weighed less but was easier too shoot. Of course on game the recoil was not noticed. This was truly a stopping rifle but you had to get used to shooting it without developing a flinch. We used to play with it cutting down trees on a friends heavily wooded property. The buddy I sold it to eventually sold it and it showed up again for sell with an action mounted scope scope!!!!!

This thread is making me feel inadequate with my Ruger No. 1 in 458 Lott.

Here's a poor picture of the only big-bore rifle I have left (sold my .458 win mag a few months ago). It's an Interarms Whitworth in .416 Remmie -- it started life as a .375 H&H. I've taken a number of hogs with it and it has been Africa with its original owner. Those are some beautiful rifles, gentlemen!

Those are fine rifles and still a bargain at the prices they get IMO. I had a 375 and it shot very well. Numbskull sold it off. Looked for another and came across the Dakota Rigby for a song so grabbed it. Plan for a buffalo hunt with it turned into a northeastern British Columbia elk, moose and caribou hunt. I will get to Africa and chase that buffalo "come hell or high water", also known as getting two sons out of college.
