As some of you know, I have a Herter's .401 PowerMag heading this way. It will be here today or tomorrow if all goes well.
However, I have no ammo. I have a lathe available at work and am fully prepared to turn the .41 Remington Magnum cases into .401's. Minus the proper headstamp. I would like to get some .401 brass if there is some. It seems as though I read sometime ago or saw an advertisement somewhere that some .401 brass had been newly manufactured. I checked the Starline website as well as Midway,USA but came up with nothing.
Does anyone know the source? or was I dreaming?
Is there any help out there?

Can't help you with the brass but here's a link to Glen Fryxell's excellent article on the .401. Gotta love the Herter's ad copy...reading those catalogs in college was a hoot. Rodfac www.gunblast.com/Fryxell_Herters401.htm

I hope this helps: www.singleactions.com/401HerterPowermagCaseForming.htmlYour best bet is to form it off of 41 Magnum. Original Powermag is rare and quite expensive. The other problem is it was soft and case life while good, wasn't as good as say 41 Starline, Winchester, Remington, etc (Norma produced it for Herters). Drop me a line at lee@singleactions.com if you have any questions. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Even though the brass is hard to find and the guns are ugly, I WANT A POWERMAG! Not really sure why, but I want one.

Do a search of custom ammunition makers, I know that there is at least one that loads it and others that make the cases.
I just do not remember at the moment.

rodfac-I have read Glen's article and it is well done. However, can anyone 'really' hold a candle to the literary prowess of World Famous George Leonard Herter when he was in his prime? If you have not read George's catalogs from the '60's & '70's you really can't consider yourself of age yet. Where else can you study under a master of the manly art of BSing?
Hey sixshooter-GAD Custom Cartridges is Bernhold Nelson. The same Bernie Nelson I referenced in the posting reply I made on the Herters .401 a couple of days ago on this forum's "Other Classified'. Bernie used to work at Herter's and live about a dozen miles West of here in Janesville, MN. He converted a good number of the .401s to 38/40 from an advertisment in the SHOTGUN NEWS.
Lee-I have read and re-read your articles on the .401 several times. Wonderful articles! My buddy Tommie up the road has been shooting the .401 since the late '60's and has been turning .41 mag cases and then running them through a 10mm die to get the bullet to stay put for years. He never did have the Herter's dies, but, they do look nice when he is done loading them and they shoot good, too! I thought for sure that I had seen that Starline had the .401 Herter's PowerMag in their repertoire. Maybe I am having a senior moment?
bigbore454-I have pictures that the Cabelas store in Illinois sent me that I think I could e-mail you if you want a 38/40 rechamber or a .401 missing an ejector assembly.
The cell phone just rang...Cabelas says the PowerMag is here and waiting for me...See you guys later!

! I thought for sure that I had seen that Starline had the .401 Herter's PowerMag in their repertoire. Glad you liked the article. Unfortunately, Starline never made 401 brass. You may have seen Powermag formed off of Starline 41. Let us know how it shoots once you get it to the range. -Lee www.singleactions.com

If this works, a rare photo of old George hisself. Undoubtedly, working on some ad copy or an upcoming journal for young sportsmen!

That's a neat photograph, never saw the old guy before! While Mr. Herter could fit more BS per square inch into his ads than anybody else in the history of the world, nevertheless I must say that whenever I have followed his advice or recipes the results have uniformly been very, very positive. It's hard to fault somebody who always seems to be right!
