On the 29th there is an Action Shooting International BUG (Back-up Gun) match at Renton Fish and Game. The courses of fire will be set up to be appropriate for five-shooters. Pretty much all targets will be within ten yards. I have three candidates for this match. All are carry guns, and all would be used double-action only. Custom S&W .38 Double Action safety Hammerless (4th Model) in .38 S&W with a 1-5/8" barrel Custom Taurus M85, .38 Special with a 1-3/4" barrel and an abbreviated grip Colt Detective Special, .32 S&W Long. All are guns I carry. The S&W top-break and Colt would be firing the ammo they are carried with (LSWCs) and the Taurus would be using a target load that mimics the recoil of it's defensive load (Federal 130gr HST +P) I shoot the Colt best, but I don't have speedloaders for it. Both the S&W and Taurus take the same speedloaders, and I have three of them. Of the two I probably shoot the S&W better. I have appropriate holsters for all three guns. What do you think? Which would you choose?

Hahaha, I remember shooting the BUG matches, they were fun. I usually used my LCR. One time shot my Ruger Alaskan 44 magnum. After the first stage, they made me shoot last at the rest of the stages. The reason was, after shooting the first stage with the 44 blew a lot of the pasters off the target. After I shot there were (I dont remember exactly) 30 holes in the target but only supposed to be 5, lol

Shooting the S&W would put you in line for a "Coolest Gun" trophy. It gets my vote.

Carry all three and use ‘em, whether they allow you to or not. David Bradshaw

Gotta vote for the S&W too. All three ? A Detroit reload ?

I love old school. That Smith and Colt just drips with heritage.
History in your hand. Makes for a great day.

S&W has speedloaders and longer grip, so if you are shooting just one, that would be my choice. If they say you couldn't use speedloaders, then the Colt. The Taurus, with that stub grip would be my last choice, but I have big paws.

The Taurus, with that stub grip would be my last choice, but I have big paws. The Colt actually has the largest grip, and the Taurus's grip was carefully engineered for my big paws and offers a remarkable level of control. The S&W and Colt have exceptionally good DA triggers; the Taurus is OK but not exceptional. Gotta admit, though- I am leaning towards the S&W.

I've been told the 32K will work and I'm looking into it, but money is unusually tight this month.

Renton, WA?
I'd go with the little Colt .32

I think I've seen stocks remarkably like those on your Taurus advertised in the Blue Press for S&W J frames. How do you like those. I've big hands too & have considered them. I'd choose the S$W.
