First squirrel of the season, only one I seen this morning. Not real proud of the shot, I had to thread it through the leaves at about 60 yards. Probably shouldn't have taken it but he will clean up fine, I hate anything but head shots on a squirrel.

That looks like a good size squirrel. All we have here are red squirrels. They are kinda little. At 60 yards I'de be hard pressed to even see a squirrel.

So this brings up a question... "where" do you try to shoot them... I'm personally not a good enough shot to get the head every time, & back when I was a kid, & we'd shoot a crock pot full for deer hunting warm up lunch, we were often shooting them with 30-30 lever actions, ( had to make sure your deer rifle was sighted in afterall ) & the goal was center of mass ( no meat on those ribs anyway ) we would usually cut them in thirds, keep 1 piece ( both front legs & shoulders ), throw away the ribs, & keep one piece ( both rear legs & shoulders )... that way, didn't matter if you had a good scope & head shot them, or used open sights on that lever action 30-30... you just kept the meaty parts, & did your best to avoid damaging those pieces... flour dipped & fried those pieces, then crocked them in with gravy, carrots & potatoes & onions ifn yer eatn em... what do you do... in all fairness, about all I shoot anymore is those danged red pine squirrels, & those go right to the cats... but I do get hungry for a big grey or fox once in a while... hot steaming Squirrel Stew & a fresh loaf of bread

This one happened to be the first hunt of the season, it was too far away and I knew the moment I pulled the trigger that it hit too far back. I killed three this morning and did the same thing with one of them, took too long of a shot and hit it in the front shoulder. As for cooking most of the time I fry em' or occasionally a stew or a big pot of squirrel jambalaya.
