I have a bear trap. Brutal device. May be forced to paint "44 MAG vs 45 COLT" on the trigger, and set it. David Bradshaw

I have all three now, although the 44 mag (S&W 69 snubby) is fired almost exclusively with 44 Spl loads and 45 Colt Montado is never loaded over 23k psi. Then again, the 480 isn't loaded hot either... but I have no doubt a ~385-400 grain powder coated lead hp at 1100 fps will kill elk just fine.

When I went from a 44 mag to the 480 Ruger . I was literally surrounded by brown bear. I had a 5"? Redhawk loaded with 320 gr Cast Performance and 20 ? Gr H110. Pretty standard 44 mag load. I was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof. Took the skiff into town, went to Tideland Tackle and Marine and got the very first SRH 480 Ruger in Hoonah,Ak. Bought some boxes of Hornady 325 gr XTP factory ammo and a big box of Buffalo Bore 410 gr hard cast loaded to 1200 fps from that gun. Made sure it functioned with both and that I could hit good with it . The next day I was back out in the brush. Gobs of bear around me all day long at work and in my camp still. Difference was, I stopped letting them punks in brown fur coats push me around. Never had to kill one with it. But me and my dog ran several with that gun. My work was killing trees not bears. A friend of mine that guides brown bear hunters there says ( wider is better) I'm debating on taking my sawzall to the 7 1/2" barrel on my SRH480 this weekend. Haven't fully decided to yet. But it's getting closer

I've been meaning to have mine cut back to 4.80" (perfect for 480 Ruger, right?) by JRH and having trigger action work done... but the darn thing shoots so well with the 7-1/2" barrel that I keep hesitating to mess with it!

If I shorten the barrel on mine it will add to its general usefulness for me. 4.80" , what a great idea !

Just my opinion but I hope you don't cut it. Those barrels that are a little longer sure are nice when the chips are down. Your Call.

But you can get a solid copper 330gr Lehigh WFN, Also Speer 325 SP with a decent flat point. Seem to recall somebody here has used them on elk ? Have some of the Speer 275gr HP's here, haven't quite figured out what for.. if you CCW your Alaskan, a fight stopper ? Thru the slats deer bullet ? The top boar was taken with 275gr Speer DC with 480 handload from 5 1/2" Gallager while bottom boar was taken 325gr Speer JFP with 480 handload from same handgun... The 275gr did more damage to the lungs in center photo....

If I was still working in the brush I would leave it long. Or if I only used it for hunting. For general summer time use, a shorter lighter 6 shot 480 is pretty hard to beat.

Lol, I have long believed bigger is better , we’ll blame that on the well known gun writers of my yesteryears! While the .44 is my 1st love and I still own several right down to my 1st S&W m629 , my go to revolvers both single and double action for many years have been .45s. They are both great cartridges capable of very many things and even though I have .480/.475/.500 the .45 gets shot the most.

If I was still working in the brush I would leave it long. Or if I only used it for hunting. For general summer time use, a shorter lighter 6 shot 480 is pretty hard to beat. 6 shot? Is it a Super Redhawk? Yes a Super Redhawk. When I was in good strong shape in my mid 40s it was no biggie to wear one all day in a strong side full flap holster. Now however, it gets to being quite heavy. And is not comfortable getting in and out of vehicles or sitting in a piece of heavy equipment. By and large, a long shot I would take currently is around 50 feet at a bear as I'm not actually hunting them with this gun. Due to the shorter barrel length I will be packin my Bisley 45 Colt. Until I resolve the barrel length issue.

I wonder if he was referring to the "6 shot" comment, being the Super Blackhawks in 480 are 5 shots
