No 38-40 here, but have a 44-40 that Clements built me. Have thought about 32-20 or 38-40.

My buckeye was fantastic super accurate and handled my hot loads with ease. I have been debating to buy another one since I had to sell mine or buy the new SS 4 5/8” one and team the 40 small & weak out to it, or lastly build a custom one. IDK but I do need to get my dies and brass back from Mr. Prince:)

I have one in a mid frame Horvath gun with 40S&W and 10mm cylinders. That’s an awesome sixgun!

Does anyone know if it would be possible to take the new 10mm/.40 blackhawk and have the .40 cylinder recut to .38-40? Yes you can.I have that Revolver and I sent the 10mm cylinder to Alan Harton and had him rechamber it to 38-40. I use the .40 S&W cylinder for plinking. The 38-40 cylinder shoots great !

The collet style crimp from Lee is a huge help loading 38-40. I talked with Alan Harton last year about a 38-40 he built re-boring an OMFT 357 and he assured me the cylinder was tough enough to take some pretty stout loads. I wouldn't push that gun with a Linebaugh or Martin load, but it'll split the difference between 41 mag and 41 special without breaking a sweat. Goldilocks cartridge, like others in it's class. With good brass available the only thing holding it back is the lack of carbide dies. At this point, it's one of the last guns I would sell. I think an FA 97 would be a great platform for the 38-40 with a new cylinder and barrel (along with auxiliary cylinders, of course!). TBH, it would be neat but would be at a disadvantage to the same gun in 41 mag. The Redding Profile crimp die works well also. In fact, I prefer it to the Lee FCD.

I originally started out with 44-40's for CAS about 25 years ago, but since the handguns were Ruger Vaqueros, it did not work out. The mixing of 44-40 and 44 Mag parts destroyed any accuracy they might have had. I eventually gave up and went to 38-40's. I have been using them for CAS over 20 years. Three Uberti's (two Cattleman and one 1873 Winchester clone) and one Japanese 1892 Winchester clone. They are all accurate right out of the box and all work well.
I changed the mainspring and the trigger/bolt return springs on the handguns and the lifter springs on the 1873. Other than that I did not do much. I did shoot some stiff (but not ridiculous) Unique loads in the handguns and occasionally had the center pin jump loose. A couple of Belt Mountain center pins took care of that (I did not really need that for CAS shooting, but did it anyway). The finish is looking kind of scruffy on the handguns after 20+ years, but I expect that. The rifles still look good. The 38-40 is a nice caliber. It is kind of hard to find a bullet that will work well in the 1873 clone and NONE of the recent 10mm/40S&W bullets will work (no crimp groove-- won't work in the rifle). but it is not impossible.

I highly recommend the Lee Factory Crimp Dies. They firmly crimp the 10mm bullets without adding a cannelure.

I bought a thousand of those 175 gr. 400 Corbon bullets for my 40 S&W. They will work but not really a good fit. I am using them up in my 38-40 and they work just fine.

Just an update on this project. Gary Reeder just called and the 5-Shot 38-40 Blackhawk is complete. I should have it within a week.
The saga continues...

So, if new .38-40 cylinders were available, would you all prefer them for a mid-sized frame or full sized frame?
