It is a popular load, my go to is 33gr. 4227, with a 400ish but my SRH runs 16.5gr. HS6 with a 450gr.

My go to is a 355gr swc I designed and alot of Heavy Pistol for 1500fps from the 5-1/2" BFR. Not the most efficient powder for the 500, but fun. It's better with the 425+ weights. And I bought alot of it during the shortage.

I know this is an old thread BUT.......On page 1, Messybear and 450AK make a post about primers and how they go into a loads pressure.....they are 100% correct and spot on! They really opened my eyes to other primers and what they can do and improve one, speaking load characteristics. And I dont deal with the really cold temps that they see. I have seen some pretty extreme results with the little testing (comparatively speaking) I have done.

Yes it’s a very interesting subject. The pressure testing at western’s lab is what really confirmed what we were seeing. I would say now that there is more variables and differences in Large Pistol Primers than any other class. But that is to our advantage as well because we are using them in everything from small cases as in 45 acp to 500 Max in revolvers and then throw in the application of using them in some smaller and lower pressure rifle cases as some people do, it’s a wide window of use. Our testing agrees completely with the testing that John K did with 680. Those weak primers are not going to do the job especially if you don’t have high load density or when the ammo cools off.

And of course if you want actual pressure data from the lab to confirm what the 680 test showed, you can get that from Keith at Western. If not I have copies available. Just ask and I can send.

Great information here... I am wondering if there is a consensus on maybe 1 or 2 powders that may be the most accurate? I have H110 that I use all the time for magnums 357, 44, 454 and 357 max. But I just tried IMR4227 for 357max and was surprised how much the accuracy improved (Or consistancy)
I'm going to load 500L in 435 LWFN and 525 LWFN and hoping to get one or two additional powders if needed.
This will be for a BFR 5.5"

Welcome HK, I’ve always used 110 and 4227, becuase they were powders I had on hand. Others recommended 1680, and once I tried it was disappointed in its performance, velocity wise, accuracy was excellent but not enough difference to make up for the variance. 110 was more blast to it, for the same accuracy and velocity as 4227, so I’ve settled on 4227 for my 500L’s and full power or above mid power loads, HS6 is my lower end go to powder.

Thanks for the info, is that IMR 4227 or H4227? I see both referenced in different places.
Also, does anyone use Quickload? I'm wondering if there is a cross reference for bullet types somewhere. Most of the bullets listed are from overseas from what I can tell and sometimes I just need generic bullets like plated or even hard cast like for 500L

4227 is 4227, whether H or IMR. They are interchangeable, I believe IMR version is technically no longer available.

Kev, it could be I was at the ranch and unable to go look at my powder stash to verify, I just know one was discontinued.

So I was able to test some of my big bore loads with "alternative" powders (AA#9 for 500L and Longshot for 454)
The bad thing is I forgot to put my SD card back in my labradar so I will test again and separate the data. I did 13gr of longshot for 454, 19gr of AA#9 for 525gr 500L and 25.5gr AA#9 for 435gr 500L.
These all shot very well, the 525gr was around 900fps, 435gr was around 1100 and I think the 454 was around 1300 for a 250gr XTP.
I am waiting for the weather to get better so I can shoot these outdoors on steel, but they all feel very pleasant to shoot and fairly accurate.
For reference, I usually load my 454 with 255gr coated bullets to 1700fps with 34gr H110. That load lets people know you are there.

Tested a few rounds of the 435gr and 525gr. Series 1 was the 435gr and series 2 was the 525gr
