Went back again today to try my luck on the local farmers Rock Chucks & again the wind was bad, not as bad as yesterday but still a real challenge because they won't leave the Lava rocks. I decided today to use the XP100 Custom Shop 223 & compare the results against the 25 TCU.
I'm pushing 40 gr Hornady VMax's fast with A2230 powder & have a 3X12 Burris on top, so a faster bullet & quite a bit more scope power, just not as much horsepower. I set up in almost exactly the same spot as yesterday & after getting somewhat hid against some sagebrush I could see 4 Rock Chucks eye balling me, they are just amazing when they just barely peek over a rock, you have almost no chance of hitting them because they have the angle. They are always higher than I am so the angle makes it very tough unless they expose a little body.
After a few minutes I spotted one closer in a little rock pile out in the field & when I ranged it, it was 118 yds straight on as usual. This gun has a normal barrel taper so it blacks out on recoil but I knew this was going to be a slam dunk! I dialed up to 12X & held just under his chin & sent a red tipped missle across 118 yds of nothing but dirt. Sure would like to video the impact of some of these, they have to puff up like a balloon when that little 40 gr pill punches their ticket.
Ten minutes later a bigger one comes out right beside the first one I had just shot, same result although this one was sitting up scratching his belly just like Fermin after a big lunch. The first photo you see is exactly how they lay when I drove over to them. Two dead barley munchers gone to that big pasture in the sky!
A few minutes pass & I spot another one at 206 yds & hiding on a Lava rock in some brush. I didn't want to move so had to shoot underneath my right handle bar of the 4 wheeler to nail him. He was on a different angle & I had to hold just a bit of daylight off his left side. Didn't go pick him up I was wasting too much time.
Last one was the most fun because I smoked him with my 8 shot 327 & the 135 gr Ferminator HP from a twisted angle on the 4 wheeler. Sometimes you drive right up on one & surprise it if the wind is just right. I rounded a corner of the field & he was feeding in a low spot with the wind blowing from him to me & he didn't hear me in time. When this happens you have about 3 seconds usually after they stop & then they go in a crack in the rocks. He made it to the rocks as I was shutting off the 4 wheeler & yanking my 327 out of the Barranti crossdraw rig. I was twisted pretty hard to the left & looking through some sagebrush & could only see the upper 1/3 of him.
Just before he broke & ran I broke the shot & hit him in the head at 32 yds, lucky shot really because I was zeroed with the 113 gr Miha HP's & this bullet being heavier shoots higher. He fell about 15 feet down off the rocks with most of his head missing. A heavy charge of H110 & this Ferminator HP gets their attention, I was really happy. You see the great Barranti cross draw rig & one of his 10 cartridge holders, doesn't get any better. $%&*@#$ Wind!!
If you look close in the black Lava rocks you see 2 white spots, one at the top & one right below it, the lower one, just over the brush is where the Chuck stopped, that's dirt & he was going to go in right there when I shot him.
