Just finished loading my my first 375 ruger loads for my development. Will be loading up two loads to start with:
290 grain cast bullet, plain base, looking for 1200-1600 fps, whatever shoots well. Eventually want to be able to shoot this several hundred yards. The load to grab for any and all purposes. Should be like shooting a trapdoor 45/70, even from a relative lightweight rifle.
Second load will be a 350 grain sierra match king, targeting 2400 fps from a 20" barrel. Plan to try to shoot this out to 1400 yards for fun. Unlike the first load, this one obviously gets the brake installed.
I'd post pictures of the rifle, but it's still a barreled action in the white, and got 2-4 months left of lead time on my manners stock. Went EH6. Looking forward to getting it all together.
------------
And if I goofed? no problem. swap out the barrel (has a quick change barrel nut) for a 7 LRM. I should be able to do anything short of brown bear with a 190 grain 7mm bullet with a good powder column behind it.
LD; every time I think I got past the 416 Ruger bug. I see a post by you and it comes roaring back ! Thanks Buddy ;-)
Lmao on that CTF, sorry but you know you need another one. I do like the 416 Ruger. I enjoy carrying the 20" barrel. For my uses, I just cannot find fault with it. Easy to shoot, compact rifle, with ample power. I like the 416 Remington also. But the slightly smaller Ruger is noticeably handier to me.

So here is a bit of a trick....
Awhile back I posted that I was on a bit of an AR15 tear that had distracted me from this "perfect" rifle thread. After setting up a couple of AR15 pistols I had a flash of thought!
I trotted down to my local dealer who holds a manufacturer's licence. I purchased a Remington 700 RECEIVER only. I had him do all the blue print work on it first. Then I had him thread up my Hart 1/9" twist barrel and chambered it in 223 AI at 11 1/2" threaded the muzzle for my JET suppressor. This all dropped into my MDT LSS chassis and I added a SBA3 (I think) pistol brace. Trigger is a Calvin Elite. I will run a 10 shot AI magazine, A Twisted Barrel bolt knob, a Valdada fixed 16X with a MP8 reticle, and last a Harris bipod. This should be a very handy (approx 17 1/2" barrel/can total) length, not too heavy or light, and just all kinds of fun.
I wonder how close the improved case will get me to standard .223 velocity in the short barrel?
Since this template could be used for any number of calibers it begs the question, is the perfect rifle a pistol?
Oh, sorry about the lack of a pic. Been busy in the shop!!!

...you may be asking a little too much of the AI...the barrel isn't just "short" it is half the length of a "standard" .223 barrel.
Just bought my first "firearm". It is a Armalite/Eagle AR15 that was made up as a factory demonstrator to be legal for the salesman to show in Connecticut and Massachusetts. 11.5" barrel with an adjustable length arm brace which is only one click short of a full length M4 style stock. Makes all the right lengths to fall into the ATF "hole".... Have not chrongraphed any rounds out of it to see what the velocity loss is vs. a standard 16.5" M4 length barrel... When the New England tour was done they sold it to a local dealer and that is how I ended up with it...
Have one of those IOR fixed 16s on a SAKO TRG .308...GREAT scope...

I guess I'd pack around my 450 Alaskan until I can't. It's a model 71 Winchester with a full magazine and really nice wood. The only thing better would be a 6.5 creedmoor lever action because all the cool folks say so........ Henry is now making the Longranger in 6.5 Creed. www.henryusa.com/rifles/the-long-ranger/

If I could only have one scope sighted bolt gun, and for a while I did, it would be my 20" Ruger .338 RCM. Load it with an all around 200-225 grain load for about anything or specialize with a 185 grain GMX for that Stone Sheep hunt. Once you kill your sheep you can take your scope off and use the well appointed irons to steer your 275 grain A Frame into that Grizz. Just a dandy little carbine.

Bringing it back up. So, here is what I ended up with, inspired by this thread: 20" barrel, a bit on the thick side, manners carbon stock, mausingfield action (CRF). For hunting, uses a trijicon accupower 1-8 so I can go 2-3x for normal hunting, and 1x for "dangerous game", a true 1x. Strap on an extra 28 ounces and it gets a tridelta muzzlebrake, harris bipod, and Vortex razor gen1 5x20. swap out the bullet from the 270 speer to the 350 sierra match king and it should be able to reach out and touch something at 5000 fpe at the muzzle, with good velocity retention for a bullet with a G1 BC over 0.8. Runs on AICS mags, but I may change that to a hinged floorplate if that becomes more appropriate for hunting. I do have an AICS style 3 round mag for hunting today, but it still sticks out a little bit. Only thing I would have done different knowing what I know now is to use a proof research carbon barrel to shave more weight. Or give up on strings of long range shooting and taper the barrel more. But the weight isn't too bad. If being able to kill an elephant wasn't a requirement, I would have dropped the cartridge down to a 7mm magnum also. Lots of choices between 7mm rem mag to 7mm RUM. Could pick any one of them and be happy. I got it with the Barloc nut, so new barrels are definitely in my future. Just add a chambering in YOUR personal favorite cartridge, what do you think? I think pretty darn close!

High up on my list would be a Ruger scout in .308, with irons on & a fwd mounted scout scope. pull the scope off & you have a set of irons that are very usable. It comes with a 10round detachable magazine. You can get 3 & 5 round mags. from Ruger for hunting. Keep the 10 rounder in a pocket for emergencies & you should be good to go.

My two pennies. In June 1986 I purchased what I considered the perfect all around 30/06, The 1st year I believe, its been a while, introduced at the Shot Show in January, I found one at my local gun store in June of that same year, a place where the "guy" behind the counter not only knew, about guns, but also knew me, by name! Remember those? My all around 30/06 of course was the Model 700 Mountain Rifle in the 280 Remington chambering. Blued steel, excuse me Polished Blued steel, Walnut stock with cut checkering, Hinged floorplate, the perfect start to a long and storied many a hunting trip, and it did. I long felt at the ripe ol age of 26 that the 280 was by virtue of bullet selection, bad marketing not withstanding, a better choice than the fabled 270, still do. I've been blessed as a working man, and by a father, now 82, who sparked and interest in a young boy, to have been able to see some of this world with rifle, and at other times, handgun (revolver of course) and longbow, in hand. Many other calibers and cartridges better suited for some of the tasks at hand have been purchased and taken to the hunting fields. With the handloading, working up loads, waking up in a cold sweat, in the middle of work, to suddenly decide on the perfect bullet/powder combo, then realizing you'll have to wait for the guy behind the counter, who knows you by name, and now knows also, your not just a buy it off the shelf type of guy, to get your stuff ordered and to you! All the while, and the years, changing your mind on the perfect rifle/cartridge for a certain type of hunt and game to be hunted. One thing that never changed for me however, was the fact that the 280 Remington will always been a favorite for me. With just shy of 30 different rifle die sets on the bench and rifles that have taken afield chambered in them. My praise for the 280 is unfounded. So I was thinking about building my last rifle! I said my last build, not purchase, As long as things interest me and used gun racks have what I want, or dreamed about as a fledgling young man all those years ago, purchases will still be made. As a side note in about 8 weeks another 35 caliber will be about ready to be dropped off at my door, a 358 WCF on a 1960's mfg Savage 110E. With 35's from a Marlin lever in 357 mag, up to the 358 STA on a BRNO magnum action, the 358WCF will fit nicley between the 35 Rem and 350 Rem Mag. (maybe this wont be my last, Shhh, don't tell my wife, She's a one gun (300 Savage)/one gal hunter, and just cant understand, why!) I do like the Remington CDL, just a Classic design, good trigger, and if I don't like it, many options to choose from, easy to get to shoot accurately, right out of the box. I found a donor in a 270 Winchester, That barrel will come off, a 24" tube will be chambered in a 280, and attached, I do like McGowen's barrels. Looking at keeping a lighter weight profile, basically making a little heavier Mountain Rifle but with a 24" barrel. Why? as I have a 280 already, well, I always wanted to see what 2 more inches would gain me. Besides, do I really need a, sound, rational, sane, reason? Crash87
