I have an itch for a m92 chambered in 480 Ruger. After searching for the better part of a year for one of the LSI Pumas, I gave up and ordered a MGM Encore barrel. I now have a handy 16" 480 single shot, but I really want a repeater. The LSI guns prove the concept is viable without going to a scratch built design, such as the offerings from Big Horn Armory. Why don't I see anyone converting the modern 1892 clones? From what I understand, the 45 Colt chambered guns hold up fine when handloads are kept in the 50k psi range. Before I ordered a barrel blank and found out why I haven't seen anyone doing this, I figured I had better ask those who may have been down this road already.

I also have a big desire for a 480 Lever gun... having just built my 476 WTH revolver, & having built a 50 A.E. lever action... the magazine tube may be a problem you've not considered... yes, the outside of the 45 Colt case is about the right size for the 475 bullet, but being a rimmed case, I'm betting that not only is the case diameter bigger, but 475 / 480's have a rim diameter bigger than the 45 Colt ( need a different shell holder for 480 Ruger than 45 Colt??? ) so a bigger diameter magazine tube would likely have to be sourced, also the lift gate may need some work for the fatter case...
not trying to discourage... I really wish there was a commercial rifle available as a companion gun, to my 480 Rugers...

Yes sir, you are correct, 480 rim diameter is .028 larger than 45 Colt. May I ask what platform your 50 A.E. gun was built on and what obstacles you encoutered?

It was a collaboration between my retired machinist buddy & myself... it was built on a new Marlin 44 Magnum ( since the bolt face was the same on the 50 A.E. cartridge ) loading gate needed to be opened up, a few parts massaged in the lifter area, new magazine tube, & barrel... once done, it turned a nice little 44 Magnum lever gun, into a beast, & we ended up having to glass bed the fore arm, to keep it from loosening every time the gun was shot... also added a better recoil pad this was done many years ago... & my machinist buddy is now to old to take on a project like this, or I would already have a 480 Ruger lever gun outwardly it doesn't look much different... but my buddy complained it was a lot more work, than he thought, when we started out, thinking it would be easy, since the bolt face wouldn't need any modifying this is the 50

I think Ben Forkin has built some on marlins. Experience with a Rossi is, uhmmmm not so good. Like headspace started thirty plus thousands over maximum and increased with firing. It was accurate though... And it's long gone thank goodness.

Regan Nonneman does the 480 Ruger on the Marlin 1894. He loves the conversion and says it fits well. Ask him yourself.

Thanks everyone for the input.
Magnumwheelman, I appreciate your thorough description and the pics of your work. Good thinking on the 50 AE being a rebated rim and saving work on the bolt face.
I was aware that Clements and Forkin had done 480's in the Marlins and assumed that others had as well. However, after owning several Marlins, Winchesters and Winchester clones, I have come to prefer the ergonomics and aesthetics of the 1892.
450ak, your experience with the Rossi is information I'm looking for. Was the receiver stretching? Locking bolt mortises peening? What loads were you running?
To be clear, I'm not set on using a Rossi for this endeavor. If the manufacturer of the base gun and not the design is the problem, a Miroku or other clone could be used.

I've got a Rossi M92 in 480. I haven't had any negative experiences and don't have a headspace gauge for it, so can't comment on the headspacing problem. It is fun to shoot and I usually shoot 420/425 gr cast with a bunch of H-110 or IMR-4227, near or at the top of the loads listed in Hodgdon's reloading manual.
It's not a 45/70, but it is still plenty of thump at both ends.

Ya, you don't see those 480 Puma 92's very often. I've got a stainless one in 454 and really like the handy little carbine.

All you need to check headspace is a cartridge case and shim stock. Measure the rim thickness and start adding shim stock. Rimmed cartridges are .060 plus ten. The. 060 is zero.

I believe the receiver was stretching. I used western powders data with exactly the same components which would put me within ten percent of their data according to them.
