How big does a ram's horn need to be to make a set of grips (BH, RH, Bisley, FA, DW, S&W, whatever...)? As it turns out, the parents of friends of ours are retiring and are auctioning off numerous business assets. Somehow there's a ram mount in the mix. That got me to thinkin'... Is stuff like this useable?

You should email Rob Rowen and talk with him.

Rob will know.
hard to tell how big those horns are from just the pics but I would imagine you could get Bearcat, Birdshead and new model XR3 grips from them. maybe Bisleys.
did they say what kind of Ram it is? looks kind of like an older Dall mount.

Looks like some sort of "Texas Dall" ranch raised/bred sheep. Over the years those guys have done a lot of cross breeding exotics from what I've read anyway. Horn shape looks similar to Dall but notice no annual grow rings (annuli). Also the "texture" of the horns is "soft" so to speak. Cape is all wrong, I've seen some old Dall mounts that yellow and are dirty but this one has tan/brown color to it. Hair is too long also. Dall's do get longer hair towards October but they seem to be more "fluffy". Not really having long neck air like that. Nice looking mount. Here's couple Dall rams I killed. You can see the annuli and what I mean by the "texture", for lack of a better term.

Thanks guys. The ones pictured are listed as Urial, which to me says Texas ranch raised. Like Snyd, I thought it was probably cross-bred. I'm guessing it's most likely a Urial/Dall cross.
All that being said, I was kinda wondering about size in general, not necessarily this particular set. Surprisingly (to me at least) this is not the first time I've seen mounts auctioned off locally. The last two times they were Bighorn, but I wasn't really thinking about stock for grips...
Ah, well...

The NM Game and Fish Department has an annual auction of bighorn sheep horns that are found or are from the rams that die in the NM Desert Bighorn Restoration Program.
Never been and have no idea what they go for.
I had a couple sets of grips made by Caudill that came from horn obtained at the auction.
I know Tim has a set I had done on the .41sp he's looking after for me.....

I'd love to have some Rowen Bighorn on my FA someday.... someday. I really like the looks of it on stainless guns. He says it's harder to get than Dall Sheep. I'd believe it. States that have Bighorns control the sale of the horns pretty tightly.

I forgot I sold you the holster too! Worse than that! You actually gave me the holster later on! Don't let his gruff exterior fool you, he's really a good guy. Tim

That's one hell of an expensive set'a grips right there if those are Desert Bighorn! ...those tags don't come cheap!!! Desert is one of my highest hunts on the wish-list, damn shame the prices run as ridiculously high as they do.
Gorgeous Grips edited: ...read closer that they're off a pick-up** Even still, I can't imagine a sheath off a Desert Ram goes for pocket-change!
