"The more I learn, the more I'm realizing a pass through is the most over rated aspect of hunting rounds". This statement could mean several things, but without knowing what animal and how big it is.... we might not know exactly what he meant. 1. Maybe the best amount of penetration is to be stopped by the hide on the off side of the animal. ddixie 2. Meanwhile two holes let out more blood than one. ddixie 3. All the energy is expended in the animal... bigger animal if it stays in..... small animals run and react little having almost all of the bullets energy in the ground beyond when they are thin and the bullet exits. 4. Two holes may or may not let blood out of one or both or neither. I've lost two deer, both large Illinois corn fed 250 lb animals. Both were full penetration with one having two shots thru the heart with 44 Mag Keith SWC and the other having one shot thru the heart with 45 Colt heavy load with Keith SWC. These big corn fed deer were fat and that fat plugged all holes in these animals = no blood trail........ both went over 400 yards (found a week later from smell, then autopsied). I forgot solid SWC's existed after that and used my HP cast.... no problems there after. 5. Whether you shoot something with a solid or HP, and you make a good shot you will certainly kill it, but will you recover it in time to use it properly? 6. Some animals seem to be bullet proof... that is until you either break them down by hitting bone or make a central nervous system hit or disrupt their living system into a immediate shutdown. Lots of options, pick one and run with it..................

Perfect penetration is when the bullet drops on the ground a few feet on the other side of the animal after exiting. But we don't want just perfect. There's got to be enough penetration to fully pass through the vitals from All angles, after smashing through tough bones if encountered. My big killer has been a 500 Linebaugh Seville using a 525gr lfn. But I also bought the soft point mold to match it. A slower way to make bullets for sure, but the soft lead does expand well down to 800fps. If the bullet hits heavy bones, the lead being a different alloy shears right off leaving a near perfect hard wadcutter to smash through and exit. So far I have only recovered one of the bases inside the animal. It was a huge hog shot quartering towards. The hit was on the shoulder, breaking the ball, pass straight back into the off hip, shattering it and stopping under the skin. Penetration was about 5 feet and the recovered slug was 386 grains.

If I were shooting big heavy biting, clawing or stomping animals I might agree with you, but there are limits to what you propose...... things having to do with old guns, lightly powered calibers, pipsqueak pistols among other things which your proposition doesn't work for. With any solid, if you want an animal to stay about where you shot it, you need to immobilize it so it doesn't run off and possibly become irrecoverable... BTDT. You have to have enough animal for the bullet to do the job on. As an example I once shot a goat for some BBQ..... a heavy load with a Keith SWC thru the rib cage heart area left it running around in the pen bleating a lot until I shot it in the head to end that. Solids have a few disadvantages, but work fine as long as you hit major bone or the CNS. A properly deigned hollow point with a proper alloy lets minor powered guns kill faster!

I had a professional hunter tell me the secret to killing animals. USE ENOUGH GUN! I fully agree about the benefits of the 640 design and am in group buys for a few. The large hp for deer, small for big pigs, cup for the large eastern nc black bears and solid on larger in my heavy gun. But the pure lead nose hard cast base lbt will still see use. It could be better for deer, but is murder on pigs.

What are the draw backs and advantages of the secant and the tangential ogive nose profile and how do they stack up against each other in wide meplate (70-80%) type heavy for caliber solids?

What are the draw backs and advantages of the secant and the tangential ogive nose profile and how do they stack up against each other in wide meplate (70-80%) type heavy for caliber solids? The secant nose profile is more abrupt than the tangential. The tangential lets more nose contact the lands further out, but neither is a gradual taper to let the bullet line up better in the barrel leade. I don't use either though as my particular method has shown better accuracy. Ask 2Dogs about that.

Hi Bob,
Were there any heavy (300ish) grain .44 cal MP molds produced?

Hi Bob, Were there any heavy (300ish) grain .44 cal MP molds produced? I sold a mold to an individual from NC in December who is involved with MP somehow (I'm sure boolitdesigner knows him). That particular Accurate Mold had 2 cavities that are a 44 caliber long nose flat point GC design at 290 grains. His intention was to see about having MP make them into a HP mold. A good way of describing it would be a 44 caliber version of the 45 Ruger Only mold. We'll see....

Thanks, I swear I looked..... Guess I didn’t look under .434... I looked in mah stash and actually have a GC version but looks like he has PB available. Seems to me there was a 44 cal sledgehammer design that had multiple weight options to it and one of them was 300ish grain. I didn’t have an interest in it so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it. But look for it that way perhaps.
