That is fine as long as you clamp the ground clamp on Bushogs appendage, not mine!

Ok, so I'm always going on and on about what your particular barrel will tolerate. What you are really wanting is your barrel to be as smooth as possible. You want it to taper from the rear towards the muzzle. You want your alloy worked out so that when you look down your barrel after shooting you see a bright shiny squeaky clean bore. THAT's when you have everything working right. I had a guy ask me the other day, "So if I am shooting at a tine can at 50 yards and hitting it every time why do I need to mess with my barrel?" Well, here is a great example why. The particular sixgun as it was in unmodified condition was very accurate. However, the cylinder throats were undersize, the barrel threads were overtightened, and there was a bit of restriction in the bore. To be specific, with my pin guages, I measured it to be a bit less than .001". So, my then becomes, while your sixgun may indeed be accurate, you may well have an EXTREMELY accurate sixgun if you take the time to see it properly tuned and tweaked. So, that said, with the barrel already off this old Dawg I decided to see if I could lap out less than .001" of barrel restriction by hand. Here you can see the .400" pin gauge starts in the muzzle but stops just inside. A .399" flies through easily with zero resistance.

So, now what I want to do is secure my barrel in my vice. I'm not worried about scratching this barrel, it is going to have to be completely refinished but the vice does have plastic jaw protectors. I took a Beartooth 41 caliber lapping slug and using their compound impregnated it with lapping compound and started tapping down the barrel with a hammer and a stout brass rod. I would estimate it took about 15-20 passes although I wasn't really counting and I used the slugs over and over after recoating them with medium to see if they would still fit tight or what. Here you can see the lapping slug protruding out of the muzzle.

I stopped and cleaned the barrel a total of 3 times. On the 3rd time I felt the .400" pin gauge free up inside the barrel. No real big deal and what is really interesting is that when I first looked down the barrel, I could see chatter marks from the tools used to cut the rifling. The inside of the barrel looks far smoother now. You can see the .400" pin gauge sticking out of the breech side of the barrel here. Slick old Dawg....

Nice job, that’s a time consuming chore but worth the effort.

So Fermin unless I missed it how did you get the barrel off? My 4 ton jack didn't have enough "grabbing pressure" so it had to go up and see Bobbby Tyler who put his 8 ton Jack on it.
