Reeders Redhawk Alaskan Packer www.reedercustomguns.com/revolvers/alaskanpacker.htmWhat do you all think of his vented rib barrel with the underlug screwed on to it? Looks to me like a good place to trap moisture and crud. But I do like the overall looks of it. Sort of a combo of an Anaconda and a Bowen L-Frame but the underlug is not machined in.

I think if you were generous with blue loctite on the mating surfaces there wouldn't be any room for crud or moisture. Just slather and wipe off excess.
Personally that barrel configuration (heavy vented) does nothing for me,.....it used to!!!! But no longer, kind of like the banded barrel front sights on Rugers.

On second thought I guess we never get concerned about the ERH on our SA guns.

If I was going to be honest, I'd have to say I think it looks gimmicky and impractical.

Maybe with a 4" barrel. I'm not much on faux under barrel stuff. My first 22 rifle was an Ithica model 49 single shot with the faux mag tube. It was a great single shot and a great first rifle. But , tho I like barrel bands for sights and slings and stuff. An added counter balance is not something I want on a gun I would pack every day. But , it ain't bad.

I don't know about the underlug not being machined....
I had a .500 built with an anaconda barrel by Bowen and it is a sweet gun.
Funny this comes up now because I just got re-bored Redhawk barrels in the mail today.
Had a stainless .510 and a blue .475 done.

Snyd, I was thinking Anaconda myself and I do not like that underlug not being better fit or something. I do think about my ERHs and I take them off after some of my hunts. I am sometimes in such dusty areas that I really need to take the gun all apart. and then there has been a couple of times hunting river bottoms,,,,,, As far as the vented rib is concerned yep,,, that is where some spray comes in handy. I have hunting decades with OU shotguns in dusty dirty fields and it takes a little more attention. One way to look at it and that is if it (underlug) is solid and you want some weight off, you could cut part off or hollow the thing out.

I must say. This one does something for me. Bowen L-Frame. Looks to be about 5ish inches? Spendy though!

I would stick with the GP-100 5" and keep it Hogue rubber grips. For me the Alaska bush is no fashion show. I'm getting the 3" GP for handy always on me use. My 44mag is the Talo 3 3/4" with stag grips that don't slip in the hand like the factory ones did. And to really make it great it has a one ragged hole rear sight and a hi vis front with the tube replaced with brass rod. I do like the lanyard hook up on the Bowen but to me bush gun over 5 1/2" gets unwieldy the Bowen would work in my world but to much HP. We have so many guns now called guide guns not no guide carries. Of course Houston Texas once had more big bore double rifles than any other place in the world

Here's my 4" 454 Redhawk. But then I have a buddy who likes bling and likes to pack it! The FA 500jrh and the 454 Redhawk this past summer...
