I ran across the "Bubba 41 Python" article I printed off of Sixgunner.com 8 or 9 years ago. Basically, it was about a local gunsmith in Texas that rebored and rechambered Colt Pythons to 41 Magnum. Did such a masterful job with the nickeling that many experts were fooled and thought they were factory. I guess 100 or so were built before the ATF and/or Colt put a stop to it. Just curious....has anyone on this board handled one? I saw one for sale on Gunbroker.com back around 2002. Seems to me it went for $3,500, but I may be wrong. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I have also seen a couple articles about them on the internet. One included a photo and the story was that some of those alterations came from a shop in Florida until one had a problem and the guy quickly disappeared.

I've read about them but have only seen two for sale in all these years. Last one I saw was probably the same one Lee saw and there were just too many projects started to jump on it. I still would love to have one made some day.

the one I remember reading about had to be treated like a .41 special. Mag pressures/velocities were potentially life shortening.

Lee, A local gun shop in my area had a blued one about a month ago. If this was not a factory gun I will eat my hat. It was not for sale but was owned by a local person and he had dropped it off for the gun shop owner to look at. The gun shop owner had been telling me for years that it existed and I never believed it so he called me to stop by and take a look. I swear that gun looked like a factory gun, it had all of the correct marking in the correct locations and everything. It had not been shot and had a tie wrap around the hammer so it could not be cocked. The end of the factory box said .41 magnum, one of one hundred. If it was a fake the guy did one hell of a job!

None of them are factory guns, not experimental not one of a kind, just not Colt. They were made to look original like they came out of Colt but someone unauthorized by Colt to do this did very nice work. I still enjoy seeing pics of them though, nicely executed work on them. There were some 3" Pythons made up by a distributor made from a bunch of leftover 8" 38 Special Pythons and they have some collector value as well although not so much as an original 3" Colt Python.

I always wanted a large bore Python but they're too nice and too much money so I had a Python barrel rebored to 44 and sent it and a 586 and a 696 cylinder to DClements last week. This is one of those I can't wait to see.

No factory 41 Python, but there may have been a factory prototype in 400 Colt Magnum: I acquired these shells a few years back. Apparently, Colt formed them off of 30-30 brass in the early 60s. Though never confirmed, word has it one Python was chambered for testing purposes. There's an article on my website with more history on the 400 Colt is anyone is interested. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Was wondering my friend had a Python and anytime he would shoot magnums with any kind of regularity it would go out of time. From reading I get the impression that this was common with Pythons. Do you think a 41 would be more of a problem?

Back in the early 80’s when I worked for Ft. Worth PD I took a Python to Peebles Gun Shop in Arlington to have it smoothed up and enickled for a duty gun. They were building 41 magnum Pythons. Peebles thought I wanted my Python converted till I told him it was a duty gun. He still showed me some converted Pythons. I was very interested since at the time my big bore revolver was a 41 Blackhawk. When I asked him if the Python frame would handle the cartage he it would. He also had a Python with a Ruger barrel and a Ruger with a Python barrel. All 41 magnums. They did good work. Wished I could have gotten one. Wished I would have kept my duty gun too.

400 Colt Magnum sounds interesting. Has anyone done it as a custom?
