Didn't the M29 mountain gun come with wood? At least the one they put out in the 90s

all of the late 80s and 90s guns had rubber stocks first Pacs them Hogues. Arends are on the latest couple of incarnations of Mountain Guns. By far the best stocks that I have found for them are Herrett's Jordan Troopers. Even the faux Troopers in hard plastic from Pacmayer are an improvement. The recoil shoulder is covered, the gun does not move in the hand under recoil, the relatively flat back and front section feel too big for my short finger until I touch off heavy loads.

Jefats, Not all of them do, my 25-13 came with the roseishwood finger groove stocks in the picture. I purchased a set of Hogues for about 2 cylinder fulls and went back to the wood grips. I am thinking of a set of Roper style grips for it now though.... Fowler, you are correct. I was referring to pre-lock MG's and didn't make myself clear. Mark, The 357 is a 7 shooter.

I have one of the 25-13s and it is a real gem, despite the lock. To be honest, it's my only N-frame, but that will not remain the case indefinitely. I'm still looking for a 625 Stainless w/o the lock for less worry in the great outdoors. Mine came with Ahrends rosewood grips and they're gorgeous. While the SA trigger is superb, the DA stacks a bit toward the end. Still shoots great though.
A fellow co-worker had the same gun and had his action tuned by the S&W performance center. The change to the DA pull was remarkable and well worth the $ in my opinion. I was thinking about having Grant Cunningham do the work, but last I checked, he was so swamped, he wasn't taking on any new clients or work.
Max.

Hello, New here as a poster. I searched the net for Ross's load without any luck. If anyone has a link for that load I would appreciate it. I have a 25-13 and have been looking for a real stopper without shaking the gun to pieces. Looking forward to your responds. wls

I wasn't aware that he had a preferred load for the S&W N-frame in .45 Colt. I know John Linebaugh had a specific article dedicated to the M25-5 and lists loads appropriate to same and they are STOUT loads. Nay, make that VERY STOUT! He lists a 310 gr. Keith-type slug over 23.5 gr H-110 @ 1100 fps and a 260 gr. Keith atop 25 H-110 for 1130 fps. I have a copy of the article in MS Word but it should be available on his website.

Maxcactus, Yes, I mean Ross Seyfried. Rigby referred to a Seyfreid load an page one of this thread. I have a letter from Linebaugh back in April ,2004 listing some of his favorite loads for his 625 45colt. He uses a 260g bullet, I don't have any so I used 255 lswc over 16.5g 2400. It seemed a bit stout even in my Ruger Blackhawk 51/2 inch so I doubt I'll put it in my Smith. I haven't tried 8g WW231 yet. I used to shoot 8g WW231 under a 255lswc in a 10 inch Contender back in the early 90's and it was very accurate and worked well on Ohio deer. When I get time I'll load up some 8g WW231, shoot across my pro- chronograph out of the Ruger to check the speed before I put them through my 25.

I don't think Seyfried ever wrote about shooting a 45 colt Mountain Gun, he did write about the 44 mag. In fact he has the very first 44 mag Mountain Gun to leave Smith and Wesson. I know he only receintly aquired a model 25 with a standard barrel and has been shooting it with a heavy load of H110 but it is less than the load was listed above for it from Linebaugh. I also seem to remember the article listed 23.5gr of H110 being the max with the 255gr bullet as well but I have never worried about it bacause I will NEVER shoot that heavy of a load in my 45 colt Mountain Gun! I mean what is the point really?
I have run a bunch of 8.0gr of Unique or 8.0 to 8.5gr of W231 with 255gr Keith and 300gr WFNGC bullets in mine. Accurate and the recoil is very bearable. I have run a few heavier loads but the fun goes fast and I end up bleeding from the cylinder release battering my thumb. Besides if those loads are not enough then I am going to a 475 Linebaugh not a faster load in that gun...

Hey Fowler, Did you ever chrono any of those loads out of your Md.25? Also, for general consumption: How do you people carry your Mountain Guns during the summer concealed? Looking for suggestions. WLS

WLS, I apologize for missing that previous reference to Ross Seyfried in this post. I usually read a post entirely before replying and thought I had here as well.
As for carry, I ordered an El Paso Saddlery Pancake when I first acquired my Mountain Gun and it has been an excellent concealed carry and outdoor/woodsbumming carry rig. Will try to take and post pictures this weekend.

WLS I have chronoed it but it was a long time ago, I want to say 8.0gr of Unique runs a little over 800fps with a 255gr Keith or a 300gr WFNGC but I am not certain of that velocity. I have run 300gr at 1100fps in that gun but they were no fun at all, the only way I would use those again is as a bear back up load in Alaska while flyfishing. I think the classic 45 colt loads suit this gun very well, I have 3 different Ruger Blackhawks in 45 colt and a 475 for heavy stuff.
I carry my gun in a Milt Sparks AW200 holster, Elmer's classic holster for the Smiths. It carries very well, is not particularly concealed but then it is not a concealment gun to me, 1911 are for that, but it is a fine trail gun. I had one day a couple of years ago that I shot at 5 ground squirrels over a couple of hours and killed 4 of them, all at 40 to 75 yard distances. Ground squirrels are a small, difficult target so 80% I thought was pretty good. I could have busted a nice bull elk later that year, I just needed it to be the next day! I had a bull standing still at 60 yards with the sights on his shoulder, I counted coup on that bull. It is a fine trail gun...

I bought this .44 mag MG used a few years back and as you can see, it has a bear head etched into the side. I haven't seen another with this. Did this come with some of the guns or was it added later??
