Going to South Carolina next month for my second of what I hope to be an annual hog hunt with some friends I met online. Last year I rode their Marsh Tacky horses, had a blast on those awesome horses. rugged and hardy. this year, my farrier friend and I are trailering my two Nokota horses down for the hunt. Spending some extra time riding to get them legged up for the hunt. Last year we did 16 miles in one day. This is a horseback hog hunt with hog dogs. Dispatch of hogs is with a knife, but you can be sure I will be packing one of my Ruger single action revolvers. You can see my pig sticker hanging from the saddle. it was made by our very own Tuskbuster from this forum and a local guy made the sheath for me. Even bringing my Black Mouth Cur down with me Couple pics of the ponies that are heading south with me

Very interesting and sounds like fun. I haven't heard of hunting hogs this way. Can you describe how the planned process goes?

They hunt private land, free cast the dogs and when they hear one bayed, run in and one guy grabs the hog by the back legs and the other guy comes in with the knife to dispatch the hog.

I can tell you first hand that it is a lot of fun taking them with the knife, I've done it twice. You will have a blast, just make sure you match the knife to the hog! On my first one I had more knife than hog, he was kind of small, maybe 80-90 lbs. The second time we were into lots of hogs & the other guy had the big knife & I had to use my own & it was small & I had a big hog on my hands & it got kind of western. I weigh about 290 lbs. & he was dragging me as I was sticking him & one of us was getting tired! I finally bled him out, what a rush, I couldn't even sleep that night, I was fighting hogs all night in my sleep. You guys will have a wonderful time & going on horseback is always fun. This is my bigger hog with the small knife, he probably drug me 20 yds. with 2 dogs holding onto him. Dick

Glad you ended up getting the upper hand and was able to dream about it.....not in the hospital. When I went last year, There were 6 or 7 of us all together. aside from the dogs on the hog, we also had a guy holding the back legs and one guy on each side. Keeps us from getting the nightmares. This group is just a bunch of good old Southern boys enjoying their horses and hounds and helping out some of the local plantations It's going to be fun to get to ride my own horses down there and see how they do along the banks of the Great Pee Dee River!!! I'm second from left.....in both pics. Knife was made by Tusk Buster.

Rob, what is the background on the Nokota horses and the Marsh Tacky name? Oh an thank you, I have been trying to figure out where to strap the sheath for a good fixed blade knife on my saddle and that rear cinch strap looks perfect!
