Had a nice conversation with Jack today. Nearing completion of my 480 Midframed Flattop and starting two more very exciting projects.

I do have some extra 475 barrel with 1 3/8" o.d. ... just saying... thinking that could be used to machine integral front sights, octagon barrel etc... we're still working on a pair of 480 Achilles

I think a 475 JRH Special would be a great 5-shot DA revolver on the N-frame S&W. You can sling 400 grain bullets sloooowwwwww like a freight train, or a lightweight Barnes XPB for up close and personal SD work. Bye bye 44 mag, meet my 475 JRH Special! I like it!
Is there any loading data out on this one yet, and the related bullet weight/velocity numbers?

Whit was getting one of these built. I'm sure he'll keep up informed as the project moves forward.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a donor gun.... I never should have sold that 629!

Knowing Max's penchant for abuse it's probably a N frame with a .5 inch barrel with a custom skelotionized frame.

First I've heard of a 475 special! I thought I've heard of most. How does it differ from 480?

I brought up the idea about a year and a half ago to Jack about a 475 special "Mountain Gun" He said there just isn't enough "meat" in the barrel.

I don't suppose a previously maga-ported 629 Deluxe would work, would it? Since they rebore the barrel...
I spoke to Jack today about this one. I've been looking for a donor gun for awhile now. There's a nice 629-1 on gunbroker, 6" bbl, but I'd really like a 4" bbl for a great woods-walking gun, maybe shoot a blacktail in the thick trees here on the way to the coast. Talk about a PPP (perfect packing pistol)!
Jack says they've been testing, with 25k psi set for max loads. Max bullet weight set at 325 grains... plenty of cylinder length for more, but the idea is to keep the gun lasting as long as a 629 in 44 mag. Recoil is similar to 44 mag, but not as fast.
No W296/H110. They've been using Power Pistol and W231. Sounds like Blue Dot might work as well (for guys like me that are still burning up old stock from the early 1990's.
Thinking hard about what I'd need to do to get the donor gun and then set aside some cash for the 5-shot conversion.

I see there hasn’t been any activity here for a while. I became very interested in this caliber because of this thread and seriously considered having my model 21-4 N frame converted but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I started searching for a donor gun and came up with a mid frame Ruger. Had to then wait for Jack to move his shop and after a couple other delays got the gun to him. It is now finished but this virus lockdown is keeping me from picking it up. Soon I hope! I am entering uncharted waters with this load. Jack has some loading info for me but I am very interested in any experiences Whitworth, Encor64 or others have had with this caliber.

I don't have any experience with the 475 Special. Like you, I ended up using a Ruger Midframe Flattop Bisley as a base gun.
So, built the gun in 480 Ruger to simplify brass issues.
But, will be watching as this unfolds.
