No 41's here but I've often said my much favored Bulldog 44spec that is in my vest pocket right now would actually make a better 41spec.. Someone earlier in this thread said the new 'Smith M69 would make a great 41mag., I agree to that too. In long guns it seems that the 44mag gains @250fps roughly per bullet and powder choices. The .357 gains quite a bit more when barrel length is tripled. So..am guessing the 41 mag will also gain more than the 44mags too ?

I ordered a lifetime supply of Sierra 170:grn HPs last night. It can easily be launched at 2100+ fps from the Henry lever gun. Probably anything deer size or smaller wouldn't make it far. Clearly the heavier bullets are best. Bought 210s from Nosler, Sierra and Hornady. I'll try them all, but usually lean XTP every time. But, you never know till you try. I don't know. I've only shot one deer with the 170gr Sierra and I wasn't particularly impressed. I was driving it pretty fast (can't remember the load) out of my 4-5/8" OM Blackhawk and it came apart in the chest cavity at 35 yds (after hitting a rib). Admittedly, this was only 1 instance, but I've had better results with a 210gr LSWC pushed to around 1000 FPS. I would like to try some 210gr XTPs at some point.

as someone who loads close to 80 different cartridges... 41 is one I've just not stepped across the line on... yet... I have & load for several 40 calibers ( 10 mm, 10mm Magnum ) as well as several .429's... so??? my buddy did an open top conversion on a 51 Navy in 41 special... I'm guessing my 1st will be talking him out of that

I load for seventy some odd calibers too. It'll take me a while to get stocked up on components.
But, having a great time doing just that.

so... you guys in the know... how is the sectional density on normal hunting weight bullets compare on the 41... to heavies in 40 & in .429... is the 41 a real sweet spot, that it offers up something better than can be achieved in 40 or .429???

I've been wondering if there was enough meat in the cylinder of a 51 Navy to do a 41 Special for a little while now. The 41 LC (inside lubed version) is actually a .386 so that's pretty close to a Navy's .380 barrel. I'd LOVE to see some pics of that one!!

41 special... but he does quite extensive changes... new Arbor and cylinder... I'm sure he has it put away... but I'll try to remember to ask him about it the next time I'm over there... in all fairness... it might be a 61 army... if so, would that be more conductive to the 41 caliber bore, or are they the same dimensions, just different grip???

The '60 Army has the same size main frame (with a longer grip frame) , although it has a small "step" in it to accommodate the slightly larger front part of the 44 cal. cylinder. The Army can accommodate 6 44 Colt rounds, but not 6 45 Colt rounds. I believe the issue there is with the size of the cartridge rim, so it seems the '60 Army would likely have room for 6 41 Specials. The 51 Navy's have room for 6 38 Long Colt/Special size cartridges, and also will work with 6 41 Long Colts. I've been wondering if there was enough meat in a Navy diameter cylinder to chamber the slightly larger "true 41 caliber" 41 Special. My suspicion has been ...Maybe?? A 41 Colt OR even better 41 Special conversion on a Uberti Navy I have is an idea I've been toying with for a while I LOVE the idea of a 41 Special in either the Navy OR Army configuration!! Sounds like your friend has a very cool revolver either way !

SAVIT... I stopped over there today... it's a 51 navy ( still put away yet though)... but it's a custom chamber in what he is calling 41 short... cartridges are 1/16th inch shorter than the special... his load is only 4 grains of unique... he says the diameter is okay, length and pressure is the problem

Half a dozen marlin 41 leverguns on GB right now too😈 ....and because Henry has come out with a .41, prices on the Marlins are the lowest in a LONG time... 1894FGs used to sell for $1300+...now they are less than a grand. Even the little LTD 16.5" stainless is down. One just sold today for $1765...they have been bringing $2500-3200... Bob

I would not have thought the bigger calibers would have had a higher sectional density on the heavier weight bullets???

That certainly answers any questions I may have had. That sounds like a really cool set up.
