the conversions (for .22 lr in an ar--just bolt and mag) I would not recommend. the .22lr and .223 are different barrel diameters, even though it is not by a huge amount, can create accuracy and leading issues

Is anyone shooting the 10/22 takedown model? Is the accuracy on par with the standard model? A big part of the appeal of a 22 upper for the AR is that it breaks down to a very compact package for transport. The 10/22 takedown could easily work in this same role. How well do they hold zero with an optic mounted on the receiver? I spend most of the Spring Summer and Fall months on two wheels, so something compact to transport would be ideal for me. Either the 10/22 takedown or an AR 22 upper would fit into a backpack sized (more or less) bag so I could leave my truck home.

I have the 10/22 takedown and mounted an old 4x burris compact on it, the scope does not extend past the end of the reciver when its disassembled and that alows it to fit properly in the carry bag. The kit comes with 1 shoulder strap thats no good, I got cheap day pack replacement harness from a mountaineering store and fit those on the Ruger pack. With that set up, I'm able to ride my dual-sport around with it securely on my back, there is room for extra mags, some ammo, and a sandwich. The front of the reciver has a clever little adjustment ring , mine has needed no adjustment yet, and it shoots the same as any other 10/22 I've had before. I like mine, its black/stainless, I see there are some variations now.

I am a 10/22 guy. I have built 15 or so.customs and my personal minimum accuracy requirement is 1/2" @ 50 yards with hunting ammo - not match ammo - though most of the shoot considerably better than that. In fact I have a couple tbat have shot .1xx's with match ammo. If you want an accurate semi auto the 10/22 is hard to beat.
That being said I always wanted an AR-22 to match my M4gery. I had one built. In order to get accuracy AND reliability where I wanted I had to spend more money. Easily twice the price of an M&P 15-22. But to me it was worth it. If you are happy with a 1-2" shooter at 50yds the M&P will work great. If you want accuracy be prepared to spend more.
FWIW my AR-22 is a near duplicate of my .223 carbine and makes for great low cost practice. If I want to hunt bunnies or squirrels I grab a 10/22.

Markbo, I'm I right to assume that kind of accuracy is with aftermarket barrels?? I'd be quite happy with an inch or under at 50 yds. I'm thinking that a 10/22 takedown is probably my best option for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'd like to set one up with possibly a high quality red dot sight. Waiting on a motorcycle repair bill to come in to see how much of the budget gets busted .

You might get lucky with a factory barrel, but yes my level of accuracy is with aftermarket barrels. EXCEPT...there is a way to maximize accuracy with the factory barrel via CPC - Connecticut Precision Chambering. He has turned a several of my own 1-2" barrels into >1/2" barrels for cheaper than the cost of a Kidd or Federsson barrel.
A couple of other little things you must do. Get a poly recoil lug. Do your own bolt hold open modification. Easy and cheaper than buying the part. The last for a budget build is a Volquartsen hammer. Yes just the hammer. There will still be a little take up but the trigger will be greatly improved.
Or....you can just plunk down $1,000+ on a complete Kidd rifle and be guaranteed near Anschutz level accuracy. There is a huge range in 10/22s. Just gitta know what you want before youbstart spending.

We built up a super accurate AR-22 for a SHOOTING GALLERY episode. Spike's Tactical built the upper on a Lothar Walther barrel with a match chamber. The lower was custom built for the gun by JP Rifles, with a trigger designed solely for .22 and nor interchangeable with 5.56.
I took about a dozen different brands of ammo to the range to see what it wanted. The first brand, CCI Tactical -- which I'd never heard mentioned as a tack driver -- put the first 5 shots at 25 yards from prone on a rolled up jacket into a single ragged hole.never tried any other ammo, just took it to the range next door, shot a Appleseed and got the "Rifleman" patch. Since the little bitty prone targets counted double , was like shooting fish in a barrel.
Of course we ended up with over $2K in the thing. When CCI Tactical dried up for a while, it became an expensive door stop. Match chamber was finicky as hell...only other that that would really deliver the groups was Federal Gold Match, and it would invariably light strike one every 100 or so rounds. When CCI Tactical reappeared, I bought a bunch of it.
Realistically, my 2 TAC SOLS and my Clark 10-22 will shoot just as well without all the ammo drama.

I am looking to sell an old-style DPMS .22 upper; PM me if you're interested in details. It is a flattop with a free floated 16" Heavy Barrel.

Old thread update: Well after a lot of hemming and hawing I finally decided to go with a 10/22 takedown. Then hemmed and hawed some more about which version to get. The debated about if I should go new or wait for a used one to pop up. Fast forward to Friday night, and I see what appears to be a Wood Stocked 10/22 takedown peeking out from behind some other stuff behind the counter at the local LGS/Range... and the Ruger takedown bag off to the side. When my friend Steve behind the counter finished with another customer, I asked "Is that what I think it is over there in the corner?" Steve says "Yup, you've been looking for one of those, haven't you? That just walked in the door about 45 minutes ago. Took it in on trade" He hands it to me and lets me take it out to the range and run a few mags through it. Seemed to be having a bit of a feed issue with some ammo, but it functioned well with Mini Mags and grouped about as well as I can shoot a rifle at 25 yds off hand, most ripping a nice ragged hole. It also had a Williams aperture rear sight and a matching Williams Fiber Optic front sight. Asked Steve what the "good guy, green cash money" price was, and we had a deal. Shot a few hundred rounds through it at the store/range... took it home and gave it a good cleaning, and tried cycling some other ammo through it by hand. About half of my 22lr stock seemed to get hung up on the edge of chamber opening, as if not getting sprung high enough from the mag. Took a ride in the snow up to Kittery Trading Post (as local LGS was closed due to the snow) and grabbed a new factory 10 rounder. Problem solved!! Seems to feed everything just fine now! Will post the required pic soon, although I'm sure you all know what they look like . Thanks to everyone for all the advice and help.

Like squawberryman I put the Kidd trigger group in my factory target, mounted the leupold 3x9 and hit whatever I shoot at. Just about enough to make me list my Kimber bolt rifle for sale.

My .22lr tastes run very strongly to Marlin, but with a SBR lower & a .22lr suppressor, I can't help but want a .22lr upper with a 4.5" barrel.
