Axe, that 300 GNR looks to have real merit. It gets you back to a rimmed cartridge and ups the horsepower in a big way.

Have shot the 30 carbine and have no experience with 327 federal magnum.... if you had a choice of one or the other which would it be and why? I was thinking of your original question as I would really like to see what the 30 Carbine could do when slinging a sledgehammer bullet or even the Miha 115 GCHP. Sixshot could tell us if we could just get him to put more than 3 grains of powder behind a bullet!! Mr Garza I was thinking about using the sledgehammer as well.... I just dont like rimless cartidges in revolvers. Ill blame it on OCD |have a literal fascination with the 32-20 and 327 mag although I dont own either one.... I have a 30 carbine

Dang Dawg's always after me! I don't always use 3 grs. of powder. Actually I've shot a whole bunch of 30 carbine using the 100 gr. jacketed Plinker bullets & also the 110 gr. RN bullets with 12 grs. of 2400 & they absolutely demolish rock chucks. Can't remember the velocity but I've been shooting that load out of OM 30 carbines for many years & its a rock chucks worst nightmare. Very flat at distance & a train wreck upon arrival. 3 grs of powder %#^&(@#!Q!!

I don't own a .30 carbine Blackhawk, but do have a .308, .32-20 Contender barrel and shoot the 'sledgehammer' in it regularly over 14.5grs 110/296 or 11.5grs 2400 and can vouch for its 'Hammer' affect on the 100yd rams. I don't see a problem loading the 'sledgehammer' in .30 carbine cases unless it'd be that the overall length would be too long for the cylinder forcing you to seat the bullet deeper in the case, cutting back on case capacity.

Russ is correct as to the length issue. What value would the Sledgehammer bullet be if in the Ruger 30 Carbine you had to "deep" seat the bullet and reduce its powder capacity?

Thinking about it a bit more, I might as well pick on Tyrone and Stan who have multiple 30 caliber sixguns and ain't hardly fired a shot out of any of them. Them slackers outta be able to tell us what we want to know too!

No time for shooting here... We run an average of 25,000 shooters a year through the range... Add a couple of student classes a week, a match a month, a few instructor classes, fluffing up the Hi Jack thread, and I am done.. Maybe I'll have time after my 70th birthday.. Just 6 years out..

Dick uses .32-20 brass in his .30 carbine, now if Fermin could just convince him to load a few with, say 10.5 - 11.5grs of 2400 under a a 'Sledgehammer'.......

The throats on my .30 Blackhawk were so small I'm pretty sure it was head spacing on the ogive.

I'm shooting 32/20's in this new model but I've shot many, many thousands of 30 carbine loads in several OM's over the years. Always hated trimming the little buggers.

You gents are a bad influence for sure. I wish someone would buy Dicks 327 chambered buck eye, so I can quit thinking about it. I would have mine punched out if I knew I was not going to trip over a Marlin lever gun in 32 mag. And I have loaded for the 32-20/30-20 for so long it is very seldom I have issues with it. I run my 32-20's over the top a fair bit. I am still fighting my S7. I find the grip to be to blasted small and am going to take care of that in short order. I have been fascinated since I was in junior high with the 32-20. I would like to put one together as Ed Harris has done with his "bunny guns". He basically put a barrel liner in a .410, he likes 32SW. I was told for years by folks how much a pain the 22 hornet was to work with. Played with it a long time with very few problems and I treat the 32-20 brass the same. I sure missed the wagon on the 8 shot Blackhawk 32 mag. One of those cut to a 32-20 if the cylinder has room would make me smile.

Boy,,, 2 dogs sure put a burr in sixshot's Crocs. And I know he puts a bit more than 3 grns of powder in some of his 32's as well. Seems I recall him popping shots at a rock in a canyon last year about 400+ yds away. At 3 grns,,, them slugs woulda plopped into the river before even getting there.
Now,,, I'll freely admit I don't have a direct answer to the Sledgehammer slugs performance out of a 30 Carbine,,, or even one of my 32 mags. But I have shot a fair number out of my 327 Blackhawk. With that slug,,, in that gun,, I'd feel comfortable in my thick woods using it to whip up on our whitetails. And I'll also say I've not used any of the Miha 115's in any either. My 115 grn mold is not a GC version. Well, at least the one I'm casting for. Mine is a PB version. My 115 grn GC Miha mold is still new. Lastly,,, I'll let old 2 dogs kick on me a bit more in that my 30 Carbines have not been out on the range since I got my first 327. But I did buy one of those nice OM 30's just a few months ago.
I,,, like so many others have found it's easier to reload a rimmed case like the 32's & such over the 30 Carbines. And since I have a 32 cal Buckeye,,, I don't have to get a NM 30 Carbine & use the 32/20 brass to play in that ballpark.

The 32's & the 327's sure seem to be the in the spot light in the last year or so. Some of it might be the shortage of 22 ammo but a Single Six in a 32 is such a neat little package with a 100 gr slug, either mild or loaded up to Fermin or Fowler loads, it just makes a wonderful field gun. Not sure how you could improve on it, I sure wish Jason would whisper in Ruger's ear again & get them to bring it back, perhaps in a 7 shot on the Single Six frame if possible. You never see one last more than a few hours in the classifieds.

Adjustable sight 5.5 inch barrel in stainless and a fixed sight blued Single Six. There are some still floating around on Gun Broker. www.gunbroker.com/item/568874738
