I watched a video a few years back (dont know if I can find it still) where a guy hunted a giant boar with dogs and a spear..... and he went close up for the kill.... I might of held my breath in a couple places... like this one it was great to watch

I've never used a spear but growing up we would hunt hogs with dogs and knives. you get a mighty big rush of adrenaline sticking a #300 boar!
Ol' boy by the name of Dan Moody out of south Texas has a series of Hunting videos called Dogs on Hogs www.danmoodyhunting.com/
I've got all three and they're very enjoyable. I think he has some stuff on youtube as well.

In 2008 when we were wintering in Bandera, Texas I took 2 feral hogs with a knife & one with my OM 41 shorty. I also took 2 Javelina with the 41 in west Texas. The first hog was only about 100 lbs. & I had a big knife, I stuck him good & he went down pretty fast & it was over. The second hog the following week was in a big group of hogs & he was much bigger & I had to use my own knife which was much smaller because Daniel was back behind me killing another hog with the big knife. When I stuck him he started dragging me & squealing so loud it about broke my ear drums. The dogs were barking & growling, the dirt, dust, shit & blood was flying everywhere & I was worried one of the dogs was going to bite me during the fight. Finally I got 3-4 more pokes in him & he went down, good thing because one of us was getting tired! I weigh close to 300 lbs, you can guess how big he is. This is the smaller hog I got the first week with the big knife, I thought I was Jim Bowie! This is my third hog, I shot him with my 41 shorty, you can see a spot about 4" behind his ear, that's where the 230 gr. Keith slug went in, it came out of his left jaw & he dropped like a rock. Dick

"That ain't a knife..THIS is a knife !" A favorite movie quote of mine ! From the above , I'd say somebody knows or should know of Lynn Thompson. It takes a serious set..to wander into the middle of that with a sharp object. My respect a given at this point. I've thrown knives to kill mice and frogs before, but...yikes ! Here ! Hold ma beer ! I've got a Ka-Bar and a bowie, hmmnnn..

I'm guessing, that by the time you are standing over the dead hog, a whole lotta un-gentlemanly language has flown.

Can't remember the language, I was kind of busy at the time. What I remember most when fighting the big one was the high pitched squealing & the barking & growling from the dogs, it was a huge rush & totally out of control, there were probably 20 pigs in the pack, big ones, little ones, spotted ones & they were running in all directions. Some were running right at me, some straight away, some were right beside me. One of the hounds killed a small one as it ran by, it was an amazing battle, I was wanting my mother for a minute there!
I also shot 2 Javelina in west Texas with the 41 shorty but thats a pretty interesting story I've already told. If I ever do the "Pork Chop" waltz again I will want one of Lynn Thompson's best hog stickers for sure!

Not to change the subject but ive read.... re read and read again the tales of Sasha Simiel the tigrero in the Mato Grasso.... my wife wasnt to happy when I became enthralled at the idea of spear hunting tigres' in green hell..... that section of Capsticks book that deals with him has some pages getting loose in that section

I have never taken hogs or bears with a spear or a knife. I have been in on hunts with dogs, on hogs, where we tied them up & carried them out alive. But either type is so darned exciting, and potentially dangerous, that it is NOT for the faint of heart. But a huge rush when you do it. As I age, I'll let the wisdom of my age show & always use a handgun anymore. But my hat is off to anybody who can spear a bear.

Those tusks must look real nasty when they are at face/neck level as you get dragged around!
That spear kill is impressive. Sure wouldn't want to be off with your throw!

Need to watch the video of Lynn Thompson attempting to spear a Buffalo in Australia, the bull appears to be sleeping as he stalks up very close, then just as he makes his throw things get a little dicey! Suddenly he's doing the Lynn Thompson 2 Step! Now he's a world champion knife fighter but somebody forgot to tell the Buffalo!
